Overview
The Gate Hotel Kyoto Takasegawa by Hulic, located alongside the Takase River in Kyoto, stands on a site rich in historical significance, as it was once home to Kyoto clan residences during the Edo period and is the location of Japan's first successful movie preview experiment. The hotel coexists within the richness of Kyoto city, offering a getaway amid the urban bustle. The hotel's interior combines classic with contemporary, with high ceilings, neutral colors, and many windows. If you want to explore the city, the hotel is a short drive from many popular attractions, including Heian-jingū Shrine (8 minutes), Nijō Castle (10 minutes), and Kyoto Imperial Palace (10 minutes).
The spacious, well-appointed guest rooms at The Gate Hotel are designed to provide a relaxing and homely atmosphere, making it a suitable choice after a day of exploration. You'll immediately notice the large windows in the rooms, which allow for views of the city and the green hills in the background. The suites are sparsely decorated except for patterned walls behind the beds. You'll find colored carpet floors that match the wall designs, pillows, and bed throws. The bright, spacious suite bathrooms include a rain shower and a separate tub. Amenities you can expect to find in the room include speaker systems, air purifiers, air humidifiers, bathrobes, and nightwear. For an elevated experience, you can opt to stay in the "Schoolhouse" rooms in the former Rissei Elementary School.
During your stay at The Gate Hotel, begin your day with a delicious breakfast featuring a selection of dishes, including the popular Eggs Benedict. There's also a fitness center and a lobby lounge, a calm, open space with a bar counter, perfect for relaxing with a drink while enjoying the view of Higashiyama. For dinner, make your way up to the 8th floor, which offers all-day dining focusing on seasonal ingredients and local Kyoto vegetables, complemented by panoramic views of the city and river. End your day on the rooftop terrace as you watch the sun sink below the city skyline.

The Gate Hotel Kyoto Takasegawa by Hulic was fabulous. It had a lot of westerners but not exclusively, and my room was beautiful with a convenient location right next to the Gion district. There were no complaints whatsoever. Excellent breakfast included.
