Birhan Asmamaw

I was born in 1983 in Debark, home to the headquarters of the Simien Mountains National Park. I speak fluent English and Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia. After completing a short-term certification in accounting, I worked as an accountant at a microfinance institution for two years. I then pursued a Diploma in Law, followed by further studies in Economics at university, and later completed a master's degree in Management at Gondar University.
My interest in the tourism industry spans over 10 years. For the first five years, I worked as a mountain guide, particularly in the Simien Mountains, before co-founding an ecotourism business in collaboration with friends. Occasionally, I still guide tourists to various destinations, which has allowed me to gain in-depth knowledge of Ethiopia's diverse cultures, history, and natural landscapes.
Through various opportunities in the tourism industry, I have also had the chance to visit several countries in Europe, including Germany, Switzerland, and France.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"Trekking and hiking tours, adventure, cultural tours, historical tours, coffee tours, birdwatching, outdoor activities, UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, Food Tour. everything in between or a combination of them all!"

How did you get involved in travel?

"After completing high school, I was looking for a job since I came from a poor family. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to accompany a foreigner to the mountains for free, which sparked my interest in the fascinating field of tourism. As a result, I couldn't continue working in an office for long—I left my job and became a local guide in the Simien Mountains, where I worked for over seven years leading hikes"

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"One unforgettable experience I had while guiding in the mountains happened when I was leading two large groups on consecutive 10-day treks. I successfully managed the first group and completed the trek safely. However, during the second trek with 16 people, I fell ill on the 17th day. My knees became stiff and I was unable to continue on foot, so I had to ride a mule for the last three days to finish the journey."
