The best way to travel the 139 miles (223 km) between Cape Agulhas and Cape Town is by car. The drive takes around two and a half hours without stops, although there’s lots to explore on the way including Gordon’s Bay and the Bot River. There is an alternative route option that takes an extra hour.
Travelers can technically use the bus and a private transfer. This option is less convenient and not recommended. Those who opt for this will need to book a bus ticket to Riviersonderend and use a private transfer for the rest of the way.
Travelers interested in wine tasting and exploring more of the Cape region should look at this 6-day itinerary.
By Rental Car or Private Transfer
Duration: 2.5 - 4 hours, more with stops
A private transfer is your best option to make this journey. For those who wish to self-drive, car rental is easily available in Cape Town. We recommend that travelers avoid rush hour traffic, between 8 and 9 am, when departing Cape Town.
The quickest route is via the N2 highway and R316. This route leaves Cape Town via the coast with scenic views at Sir Lowry’s Pass. Bot River, Somerset West, and Caledon—which offer an array of good restaurants and wine estates—are well-recommended towns to stop at for lunch. Strand and Gordon’s Bay, charming harbor towns, are also only a short detour.
An alternative route option, which takes an extra hour, is via the N1 highway and R317. Those who opt for this route will leave Cape Town via the northern suburbs and travel inland for most of the route. Recommended places to stop for lunch are Worcester, Robertson or Stormsvlei Restaurant and Farm Stall. Travelers who opt for this route should keep cash or a credit card accessible for pay tolls.
After arriving in L’Agulhas village, you can get around and visit Cape Agulhas by car or on foot.
By Bus and Private Transfer
Duration: 4 - 5 hours
This option is less convenient than traveling by car the whole way and can be made longer due to bus delays. Those who opt for this will need to book their bus ticket to Riviersonderend in advance. After arriving, you will need to book a private transfer for the rest of the route.
