This 8-day itinerary for Cape Town and the Garden Route may interest travelers hoping to explore more of the area.

By Plane and Private Transfer/Rental Car

Duration: 1.5-2 hours

A 50-minute flight from Cape Town to George Airport is the most convenient method of travel. We recommend travelers hire a private transfer or rent a car for the 30-minute drive from George to Sedgefield. This short drive offers dramatic ocean views along the way, and travelers can make a stop at the town of Wilderness en route, home to scenic walking trails, beaches, and "The Map of Africa," a vista point with panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and Kaaimans River.

After arriving in Sedgefield, travelers can get around the town using a rental car, by foot, or using private transfers.

By Rental Car or Private Transfer

Duration: 5-6.5 hours, more with stops

Traveling by rental car or private transfer is recommended for travelers with extra time. The drive includes mountain passes such as Outeniqua Pass and spectacular sea views. The quickest route is via the N2 highway, which takes five hours. Mossel Bay is a good place to stop for lunch or coffee en route, a lovely harbor town with wide beaches and a historic lighthouse.

Alternatively, you can travel on the N1 highway through the Klein Karoo, which takes about six hours. You'll pass through Oudtshoorn, known for its ostrich farms, wineries, the Cango Wildlife Ranch conservation park, and the famous Cango Caves—a 20-million-year-old network of limestone chambers. WIthout stops, this route takes over six hours. Travelers who choose this route should keep cash or a credit card accessible for pay tolls.

When leaving Cape Town, we recommend that travelers aim to leave before 8 am or after 9 am to avoid rush hour traffic.

By Bus

Duration: 7 hours

This time-consuming method of travel is the least recommended, and can be made longer due to delays. Most bus lines include at least one refreshment stop. Those traveling by bus who want the opportunity to visit towns en route can use the Baz Bus, a hop-on and hop-off bus popular with tourists, as other bus lines can be limiting.
