How to Get from Porto to Coimbra

By Train

There are two train stations in Porto where you can depart from, Porto Campanha or Porto Sao Bento, and both offer trains leaving every hour. Trains go direct to Coimbra and will arrive at the main train station, known as Coimbra-B. Tickets can be purchased online or in person, and sometimes you can find deals if you purchase in advance. 

This station is not in the city center. You have several options to arrive in the city center. You can take a local train from Coimbra-B to the local train station known as Coimbra-A, you can walk, take a taxi or hop on a local bus. 

By Car

Going by car is straightforward and quick, covering 79 miles (122 km). The drive takes around an hour and 15 minutes without traffic or any stops. The main highway A1/E1, goes direct from Porto to Coimbra, making the drive simple and easy. This route passes by farms, small towns, and some local industries, giving you some insight into the area.

Like most main highways in Portugal, this route has tolls. If you have your own car, make sure you register your vehicle. If you've rented a car, everything should be sorted, just know you're tolls will be added to your rental bill. 

By Bus

Traveling by bus is an easy and relaxing option. The quickest bus takes an hour and 25 minutes. Some buses take longer depending on stops and routes. Buses depart often, typically two buses every hour from morning till late evening. Buses arrive in Coimbra-B, the main station in Coimbra. This station is 1.25 miles (2 km) from the city center, and it's easy to walk, take a taxi or hop on a city bus to reach the center. You can buy your tickets at the station or online, and there are different bus companies to choose from.
