The trip from Zagreb to Motovun can take as little as three hours, though this largely depends on traffic conditions. This three-hour route is the most efficient and takes travelers through Rijeka.
Following the highway through Rijeka, this trip uses E65. It's the most direct option and provides nice views of the Adriatic Sea as travelers approach the city. Rijeka is also a great stopping point for lunch or sightseeing. It is about two-thirds of the way to Motovun from Zagreb and provides plenty of options with regard to restaurants and things to do.
Zagreb has plenty of rental car companies to choose from, which offer a choice of manual or automatic vehicles. Automatic cars are more expensive to rent, however. Gas is bought by the liter in Croatia, so it is often more expensive with nearly four liters making up a gallon. Remember to keep local currency (kuna) on hand to pay tolls along the highway.
For those who prefer not to rent a car, private transfers can be booked between Zagreb and Motovun as well. A private transfer is typically more comfortable than driving yourself and allows more control over your schedule. You can book this as part of a broader tour itinerary, and having a local driver is great for getting additional insights at sights and stops along the way such as Rijeka or Opatija.
