June is the start of the summer in Albania. Temperatures are hot, and conditions are ideal for lounging on a beach on the Albanian Riviera. Get in quick before the rush of vacationers later in summer. Read on to learn more about traveling to Albania in June.

Weather

Albania experiences a Mediterranean climate that's similar to that of neighboring Greece. That means hot summers. Temperatures can soar above 100°F (38°C) in summer, although the hottest temperatures are usually later in the season. Plus, rainfall is typically low so you can expect clear blue skies.

The average June temperature in Tirana is 71°F (22°C), although daytime high temperatures are more like 82°F (28°C). Sarandë, on the south coast (Albanian Riviera), is a little hotter. Korçë and other places at higher altitudes inland are a few degrees cooler but still warm-to-hot.

Crowds & Costs

June is the start of the peak summer season in Albania, although this month isn't as busy as July and August when many Albanians take vacations. Residents of Tirana, in particular, flock to the coast.

Aim for June rather than later in the summer if you want to enjoy the Albanian Riviera at its best but without the crowds and higher prices. Other parts of Albania, such as the mountains and culturally and architecturally interesting towns, never get as busy as some of Albania's neighboring countries. You should only really expect to see higher prices for accommodation and food in coastal resort towns.

Where to Go

The Albanian Riviera is the ideal destination for June trips to Albania. When temperatures soar, cooling off with a swim in the Ionian Sea is refreshing. The southern city of Sarandë is an attractive spot with cultural and historic sights to keep all kinds of travelers entertained. When you're not swimming or sailing, check out the sea-front promenade, archeological remains from various eras, olive groves in the surrounding hills, and 16th-century Lëkurësi Castle

If you'd rather avoid the relatively busy Ionian Sea Coast (the Albanian Riviera), head north to the Adriatic Sea coast instead. Albania's northern stretch of coastline is calm and ideal for family travelers. Velipoja Beach is the northernmost beach of Albania, near the border with Montenegro and the city of Shkodër, renowned for its arts and culture.

What to Do

As well as lounging on a lovely Mediterranean beach, June is an ideal time to go hiking in Albania. The temperatures are a bit cooler in the mountains than on the coast, so you can enjoy warm conditions with little rain and clear skies without getting too hot.

Travelers to northern Albania should check out the Accursed Mountains (the Albanian Alps) and Thethi National Park. Visitors to the south can hike in the Ceraunian Mountains and Llogara National Park. You can also enjoy everything from day hikes to multi-day expeditions that cross the borders into neighboring Montenegro and Kosovo.
