The rainy season in Cambodia ends in October—the wettest month (along with September) of the year. But don't let that stop you from making plans to visit. Now is an excellent time to avoid the hordes of tourists at the ever-popular Angkor Wat and the surrounding ancient city. Find out more about traveling to Cambodia in October.

Weather

Cambodia's wet season spans from June to October, and the final two months of the season are the wettest by far. In October, the rain is heavier and more consistent than earlier in the season, when short, sharp showers are more likely. The higher volumes of rain mean that some of the main thoroughfares through Cambodia—which is mainly rural and un- or under-developed—are difficult to navigate. Flooding, mud, road damage, and slips can impinge on overland travel during this month.

Cambodia is a tropical country, so temperatures are warm year-round, but October isn't a sweltering month, as the rainy season gives way to the cooler dry season. The average October temperature in the capital, Phnom Penh, is 81°F (27°C). However, the humidity can make it feel hotter.

Crowds & Costs

The wet season is the low season for traveling to Cambodia, but that doesn't mean it's the wrong time to visit. You'll find fewer tourists at the most popular sites, especially at the ancient city of Angkor. Angkor covers a vast area, and some of the "outer temples" that are further from Angkor Wat and off the main tourist bus routes are likely to be close to, if not deserted, in October. Be sure to pack the proper footwear for all those muddy puddles.

Getting there might be more of an issue, as mentioned above, because of rain damage on the roads. Siem Reap has a large airport, and it may be preferable to fly directly there from elsewhere in Cambodia or Asia rather than attempt the overland route. In October, you can find off-season specials at more upmarket hotels, especially around Siem Reap. Beach resorts are likely to be closed for the season.

Where to Go

A highlight of a trip to Cambodia in any month is spending time at the ancient city of Angkor, and this is especially the case in October when there will be few other tourists. The centerpiece temple, Angkor Wat, always attracts visitors. But the Angkor site is sprawling, and many lesser-visited temples and archeological sites are many miles from Angkor Wat. Some of these, mainly those further out, will be without any other visitors at this time of year.

In October, it's also worth spending time in Phnom Penh. It's an underrated but attractive city with interesting sights and activities to keep visitors occupied. Dine on top-notch Cambodian and international cuisine, shop for souvenirs at the landmark Art Deco Central Market, admire the architecture and exhibits at the Royal Palace and the National Museum, and stroll along the wide, paved promenade beside the river.

What to Do

A major religious festival in October (see more below) makes this month an exciting time to visit local temples beyond the heritage sites at Angkor. Bonn Pchum Ben is a two-week Buddhist religious festival unique to Cambodia (although similar to some festivals in other neighboring Buddhist countries). Locals pay their respects to up to seven generations of ancestors and leave them offerings. This period is considered especially significant as the gates of hell are believed to open.

Another activity to put on your October itinerary is learning about Cambodia's not-too-distant past. While hard-hitting, it's highly worth visiting the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Cambodia, and the Killing Fields at various places around Cambodia. These give a brutal insight into the Khmer Rouge regime and the atrocities many Cambodians who are still alive today went through. Learning about Cambodia's history provides a counter-point to the calm, peaceful experience travelers are likely to have everywhere else. Travelers with kids will probably want to avoid this.

Events in October

Bonn Pchum Ben, nationwide. During this religious festival in late September or early October, Cambodians make offerings to monks and the ghosts of their ancestors to gain good karma. If you're visiting a temple at this time, look out for the offerings of food, fruit, flowers, and money.

Coronation Day, Phnom Penh. The anniversary of the coronation of King Norodom Sihamoni on October 29 is a national holiday, and the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh is lit at night.

Birthday of the King Father, nationwide. Cambodians observe a national holiday on October 31 in honor of the birthday of the previous king and current king's father, Norodom Sihanouk. Expect some business closures.
