Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Rovaniemi
Welcome to Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland. Upon arrival at the airport, a driver will be waiting to take you to your accommodation. Located in the far north, Lapland is a region that makes up one-third of Finland's total area and is home to the rich culture and history of its Indigenous Sámi people. The city is surrounded by Arctic landscapes, full of Sámi customs, and a wide range of outdoor activities. There's plenty to do the entire year, from northern lights hunting and dogsled rides in winter to witnessing the midnight sun and hiking in summer.
The afternoon is free so spend your day walking around Rovaniemi, visiting its lovely museums, and doing some souvenir shopping. End your day with a delicious meal in one of the city's restaurants, or head out to one of the surrounding resorts for a traditional Lappish kota dinner.
Day 2: Arctic Woodlands Photography Tour, Evening Horse Sleigh Ride
To reach the most scenic and authentic Arctic landscapes, you must leave the urban area and head into the woodlands. Today's photography tour will take you to an easy-access location near Rovaniemi for some great outdoor photography possibilities. You'll be led by a professional photographer who shares their knowledge about Arctic wilderness and gives tips and guidance about nature photography. Witness beautiful forest scenery and admire wildly running whitewater amid wintry surroundings. Enjoy traditional snacks on an open fire and sip hot beverages while tuning into the silence of the forest.
This evening, join an excursion that will take you on an unforgettable journey through Lapland's stunning night scenery. You'll travel in a horse-drawn sleigh, bundled up inside warm blankets, through the frozen forests surrounding your resort. As you leave the trees, the sky opens above you, and you'll experience complete darkness with only the stars guiding the way. In a clearing at the edge of the forest, a blazing bonfire welcomes you, and you'll hear more about the myths of the North. Gaze up at the stars as you revel in an authentic Arctic night.Chat with a local specialist who can help organize your trip.
Day 3: Sustainable Reindeer Safari
Today's adventure starts with a visit to a local reindeer farm, where you'll meet a family of herders. Experience everyday life on the farm, help feed the reindeer, and hear great stories and facts about reindeer herding as you learn about its integral part in the environment and culture of northern Finland. Then it's time to set off on the longest reindeer sleigh safari in Rovaniemi and southern Lapland. If the snow permits, you can try your hand at steering and drive along the 4-mile (7 km) route through the forests. Halfway through, stop and break around the fire to enjoy some typical Finnish barbecue snacks.
Day 4: Ranua Wildlife Park Visit
Located an hour south of Rovaniemi, the Ranua Wildlife Park is the northernmost wildlife park in the world. It's home to around 200 animals representing 50 Arctic species. Have your camera ready during this half-day guided visit! You'll see brown bears, reindeer, wolves, wolverines, lynxes, owls, otters, wild boars, and many others. You won't want to miss the polar bears as they are the only ones you'll find in Finland.
While the animals here live in enclosures, they are spacious and designed to replicate their natural habitat. You'll get the entire experience on a 1.5-mile (2.5 km) walk around the park as your guide reveals facts and information about each animal. After the walk, enjoy a buffet lunch before returning to Rovaniemi to savor your final evening in the Arctic.Day 5: Depart Rovaniemi
It's time to say goodbye to the Arctic and end your trip. Your driver will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the airport, just 10 minutes away, for your departing flight. Safe travels!
