August is a great time to explore Israel's fascinating historical sites, beautiful coastlines, and scenic nature reserves. Stick to northern Israel, where temperatures are in the 70s and 80s (Fahrenheit), and the waters of the Mediterranean Sea are perfect for swimming. As August is peak tourist season, book accommodation and activities early to avoid disappointment, but in return, you can enjoy the country's lively nightlife, bustling markets, and epic festivals.

Weather

Expect hot and sunny days when traveling to Israel in August. Second, only to July in terms of heat, the average temperature across the country is 73ºF (23ºC), with less than 1 inch (25 mm) of precipitation expected throughout the entire month. Eilat, in southern Israel, will be the hottest, with highs reaching 102ºF (29ºC) during the day and nighttime temperatures only sinking to 77ºF (25ºC).

For cooler temperatures, head to Tel Aviv on the Mediterranean Coast, where daytime highs of 86ºF (30ºC) are perfect for long days at the beach, or to Jerusalem, where you can take advantage of the pleasant morning and evening temperatures that are ideal for exploring the city's historic sites.

Crowds & Costs

August is the peak tourist season in Israel, but don't let that deter you. If you plan ahead and book accommodation, activities, and flights early, you can still pack in plenty of culture, history, and stunning scenery without the price tag. Visit the most popular attractions, such as the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and Temple Mount, early in the day to avoid crowds, then escape the heat and spend your afternoons in one of the many museums dotted across Israel. Plus, with plentiful beaches along the Mediterranean Coast, you won't have a problem finding your own slice of paradise to soak up the sun.

Where to Go

Start your trip in Tel Aviv and wander the historic neighborhood of Neve Tzedek and the lively port of Jaffa, then spend your afternoon soaking up the fun atmosphere at Aviv Beach, and end your day dining at one of Levontin's hip bars or restaurants. Next, Jerusalem is a short drive away, home to an abundance of sites related to Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Wander the ancient Old City, then enjoy stunning views from the Mount of Olives, high above Jerusalem to the east.

From Jerusalem, make your way north, stopping at Caesarea National Park, famous for its picturesque Roman amphitheater and calm waters, perfect for snorkeling. History enthusiasts shouldn't miss a trip to the Qumran Caves, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered, and the UNESCO-listed hilltop fortress of Masada. Before reaching Tiberias, stop by the small village of Cana to visit the Church of the Wedding Miracle and wander the bustling streets of Nazareth, the birthplace of Jesus.

Next, with Tiberias as your base, you can explore the beautiful scenery around the Sea of Galilee. Head up to the Mount of Beatitudes, thought to be the location of the Sermon on the Mount, and stop by the small fishing village of Capernaum. Wake up early and explore the Golan Heights before the midday heat arrives, then head to Banias Nature Reserve to cool off next to the refreshing spring waters. At the opposite end of the country, in Eilat, temperatures will be too hot for long days of exploring. However, August is a great time to discover the underwater world of the Red Sea.

What to Do

With 12 hours of daylight, August is the ideal month to split your time between Israel's many coastlines, biblical sites, and museums. On a classic Israel itinerary, you can explore the country's many historical wonders, including a walk along the Via Dolorosa, which is believed to be the path Jesus walked on his way to his crucifixion—followed by a trip to Mount Zion, home to King David's Tomb and Cenacle, where the Last Supper was held. Farther north in Haifa, visit the Cave of Elijah in the Stella Marris Monastery and tour Muharakha.

When you've had enough of the heat, head inside one of Israel's many museums. Tel Aviv is home to the Diaspora Museum, which depicts the history of the Jewish people, as well as the Tel Aviv Museum, the Eretz Israel Museum, and Bialik House. Over in Jerusalem, it's easy to spend a whole day wandering Museum Yad Vashem (World Holocaust Remembrance Center) and the Israel Museum, home to the Shrine of the Book. Or, for something more off-the-beaten-path, opt for a visit to Latrun, which houses historic tanks and tells stories from Israel's War for Independence.

If you prefer exploring scenic landscapes and spending days at the beach, you'll still be spoiled for choice in August. Tel Aviv, in particular, is known for its lively beaches, where you can partake in games of matkot, an exciting paddle-ball game, then cool off with a cocktail at one of the nearby beach bars. For a quieter beach experience, opt for a trip to Haifa, whose calm waters of Haifa Bay are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Nature lovers shouldn't miss a visit to the Baháʼí Teraces, one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, and a day in Gedi National Park searching for waterfalls.
