What you'll do

Your adventurous exploration of Crete's remote central and southern landscapes begins when your driver picks you up in the morning at your Heraklion hotel. Sit back and enjoy the views as set off almost an hour south to Zaros, a human-made reservoir on the southern slopes of Mount Psiloritis. This area was a wetland until the late 1980s when the Forest Service turned it into an artificial lake to hold spring water. Today, Zaros is a peaceful beauty spot in the center of Crete that's beloved for its clear turquoise water.

After admiring the lake, you'll continue through the island's largest plain, Messara, which is dotted with Minoan and Roman ruins. As you head toward Trypiti Gorge, you'll learn about the history of the places you pass, like Gortys and Phaistos. You'll also stop to admire panoramic views of Messara and the Libyan Sea.

The off-road portion of your drive begins with a descent into the gorge, surrounded by steep rock faces and wild Cretan mountain goats grazing amid the dense olive trees. You'll exit at Trypiti Beach, a remote location that remains one of Crete's best-kept secrets since it requires a hike or 4WD to access. Here, you'll have time to swim in the clear waters and relax on the pebbled shore below ancient Minoan ruins before heading to a local taverna in the forest to enjoy a delicious Cretan lunch. Savor a barbecue accompanied by local wine or water, and then relax during the scenic drive back to your hotel.
