What you'll do

This full-day tour takes you out of the hustle and bustle of Barcelona and into Catalonia's picturesque countryside. Your driver will pick you up from Barcelona and take you through the city, passing iconic sites like the buildings of Eixample, the Royal Palace of Pedralbes, the University of Barcelona, and the FC Barcelona stadium. Your guide will share exciting stories and anecdotes about these sites.

Soon, you'll enter the Natural Park of Montserrat, roughly 28 miles (45 km) outside of Barcelona. Along the way, you'll pass incredible views of the surrounding nature with the Massif of Montserrat looming in the distance. Your destination is the region's most emblematic mountain, topped with the famous Benedictine monastery, Santa María de Montserrat.

Upon arrival, you'll start your guided tour of the site's highlights. The monastery, founded in the 11th century, still functions to this day and houses over 70 monks. Sitting atop the mountain at 4,055 feet (1,266 m), the views from the monastery are unbeatable, and you'll have plenty of time to take photos. Your highlights tour will include these vistas, plus a guided walk through the site's 16th-century basilica, which features a statue of the Virgin of Montserrat (the Black Madonna) hanging from the altar—though it's not on permanent display. If available, you'll also listen to the boys' choir singing their famous Escolanía de Montserrat.

After the tour, you'll have an hour to explore the monastery a bit on your own. You can choose what to do with the rest of your time, though one popular option is to ride the funicular to Santa Cova, also known as the "Holy Grotto." This mountain cave is an important pilgrimage site housing a religious shrine. You could also visit the Museum of Montserrat, which features archeological items and paintings by famous artists like Caravaggio, Dalí, and Picasso. Other ways to pass the time include checking out the farmers market or grabbing a coffee in the café. (Friendly note that you'll enjoy lunch on Spanish time, meaning around 2:30 or 3:00 pm, so enjoy a snack now if you need something to tide you over.)

You're probably ready for lunch. You'll make your way down the mountain via a cable car, then head to a beautiful farmhouse setting to enjoy a homemade farm-to-table meal with three courses. You'll start with a fresh salad and then enjoy a traditional barbeque meal with vegetarian and halal options. End your meal with a dessert as you take in the views. The farmhouse, set in a valley, features unique vistas of the Montserrat Mountains and fields filled with thousands of trees cultivated for hundreds of years.

Before returning to Barcelona, enjoy perusing the farm by visiting the resident animals, learning about the historic olive press, or walking through the gardens. In the end, you'll have enjoyed a memorable day in the Catalonian countryside.

The site is beautiful. Riding a cable car is always fun for kids (though there are cable cars within the city of Barcelona which are closer). There was no time to actually explore the mountain peak as we spent the majority of the "free time" waiting to get into the basilica. Likewise, there is no time for the museums either. After the basilica, you hang out and take a few pictures and time is up. The basilica itself was super beautiful on the inside. We did not get to see the boys choir as... Read more

We did not get to see the boys choir as our time slot to get into the basilica just missed out on that. It would had been nice. We probably missed it because the bus was late.

Lunch was actually very very good. There was tapas and roast meat and wine. Very hearty. You work an appetite walking around.

Tips for future travelers

This is a good change of pace activity for your Barcelona stay, but not really essential. There are other cable cars and other views. This is sort of a detour.

Quality of Experience
The basilica was very nice. So was the lunch. Kids enjoy the cable care ride. But this is a detour.
Food
This was the unsung hero of the activity. The food is rustic and very good. The restaurant had amazing views.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Guide told good stories and was very knowledgeable.
Transport
Coach was comfortable. You have to walk a bit to get to the actual place where you ride the coach. They could had told us to just meet there. There is no bathroom to go to before you get on the bus. As this was not a private tour, you end up waiting for people to go to the bathroom. This leads to the bus being late.

Montserrat is a scenic wonder and a beautiful place, however this was a large group tour so my review of it is significantly impacted by that fact. I’ve never taken a bus tour so my expectations might be skewed by my tendency to take small group tours or explore on my own. Originally this tour appealed to me because I heard many great things about the hiking. Additionally the fact that I started at 10:30 (versus 8) was originally a bonus but in retrospect the start time and large group size meant we didn’t get free time at Monstserrat until 1 pm and I found it too hot to hike. As someone with no large group tour experience I found a lot of time wasted with just the logistics and transport. For example, our meeting time was 10:30 and everyone was on time but each party had to sign in on 1 tablet and fill out a bunch of information so that took about 15-20 minutes. Then we had to walk 5 or 6 blocks to the bus. So we didn’t actually get moving until at least 11. We arrived at Montserrat at about 12:20 but all the bus parking spots were full so we waited another 5-10 minutes before getting off the bus. There were 2 guides with us so we broke into smaller groups and out tour began. The tour did not include getting close to the Black Madonna but instead included about 2-3 stops outside the monastery where information was given and one stop before the Basilica where info was given. This part of the tour lasted about 15 minutes then we were in our own for 75 minutes. At 2:10 we gathered to take the funicular down the mountain. Then we met our bus and drove about 30 minutes to the farmhouse for lunch. We had lunch inside the farmhouse between 3:15-4:30. We were served a few tapas, bread, a green salad, grilled meats, wine and sorbet. Coffee and tea were offered but not included and had to be paid for separately. The meal was good and I enjoyed the company of the other travelers. We got back to Barcelona at 5:30.

Do a little research before you go-- there wasn't enough free time to hike AND take the funicular AND see the museum AND see the Black Madonna
