Discover Tinghir & Todra Gorge

4.6 (8 reviews)

Overview

The desert town of Tinghir is set amongst an extensive river oasis that features 30 miles (48 km) of palm trees. You can easily combine a visit to Tinghir with a bit of Todra Gorge exploration, as the two sit side-by-side. Many visitors opt to explore the duo when traveling between Merzouga and Marrakech or Merzouga and Fes.

The area surrounding Tinghir is one of the most scenic in Morocco. You can enjoy sprawling vistas of desert landscape revealing impressive buttes, mesas, and plateaus. And with its ancient and colorful Jewish quarter, Tinghir also offers a glimpse into ancestral Moroccan Jewry. You can visit Elhaj Ait Ali, the old Jewish quarter, and admire its interesting architecture.

After enjoying the town, head out to Todra Gorge, which sits at 984 feet (300 meters) high and features stunning red-stained limestone. Enjoy an easy walk through the gorge or relax in the cool, shallow water.

A long drive, but I would not have skipped it (the time in the Sahara is absolutely worth it)! Tinghir was the perfect place to stop and stretch our legs for a few minutes on the walk through the gorge. The highlight of this day was definitely visiting the Berber women's co-op in Tinghir, where we got to meet the women and watch them weave the famous Moroccan carpets (and buy one to bring home!). We spent a little too much time here (who can blame me? I wanted to see all the rugs!), and had to cut our hike short in the Todra gorge short, but we still had a chance to walk through the fields in the valley and get up close to the Monkey Fingers rock formation before walking through the village back to our bus.

Tips for future travelers

The itinerary for this day was a bit too ambitious- We skipped multiple stops that were listed on the itinerary (Khamleya, Rissani, Maison Tuareg, Elhaj Ait Ali) and still did not manage to be on time for our afternoon hike. The original itinerary Hakim had planned for us had given us two nights around this area which would probably have been spot on. Unfortunately I didn't have enough time off work to extend the trip by a day, and we really wanted two nights in the Sahara, so I'm happy with the trade off!
