Overview

Enjoy a unique experience and a lifelong memory: soaring over the Catalan countryside in a hot-air balloon. After arriving at the launch site, you'll meet your crew and learn about hot air ballooning, watching and helping to inflate the balloon if you'd like. Then relish the quiet as you fly through the air, enjoying the scenery outside Barcelona from a unique perspective. Upon landing, you'll receive a flight certificate and enjoy breakfast before returning to the city.

What you'll do

Hot air ballooning is an exhilarating activity that requires an early start. You can either drive yourself to the launch site or add a transfer from your guide. The launch field is about 30 to 45 minutes outside Barcelona, and don't worry, if you opt for a transfer, your driver is happy to make a coffee stop on the way!

Why so early? Hot air ballooning will last up to 1.25 hours, so to ensure the longest possible flight, it's best to start early in the morning when the air is more stable. Plus, nothing beats sunrise in a hot-air balloon!

Upon arrival, get to know your crew, learn more about hot air ballooning and safety measures, and watch or help with the preparation process, setting and inflating the balloon. When ready, you'll climb in and take off into the sky, watching the sun rise above the mountains and illuminate the Catalan countryside. Once you reach the point of absolute quiet, your crew will explain how the wind, heat, and air all play a role in hot air ballooning, plus point out some memorable scenes in the distance. On a clear day, viewing the Montserrat Mountains, Barcelona, the Costa Brava, and the Pyrenees Mountains is possible.

After a smooth landing, the "chase crew" will meet you to collect the balloon and take you back to the launch field, where breakfast awaits. Enjoy a glass of Cava, toasting this fantastic experience before feasting on breakfast. As you prepare to return to Barcelona, your pilot will give you a signed first flight certificate as a keepsake.

This walk is for travelers interested in seeing a quieter side of Barcelona most visitors don't experience: the outlying district of Horta-Guinardó. Ideal for history and architecture enthusiasts, you'll cover about 4.4 miles (7 km) in 4-5 hours on foot and have the flexibility to stop for as little or as long as you like at any waypoint. Given Horta-Guinardó's history and location at the base of the Collserola mountain range, there are steps and sloped terrain to contend with (though most of the route avoids the worst of it).

You'll start in one of Europe's most historic gardens before traipsing south through centuries-old neighborhoods, ending at a prominent jewel of Catalan modernista architecture. You'll discover turn-of-the-20th-century villas that once catered to the upper echelons of society and weave your way amid Catalan farmhouses and through narrow streets to near-forgotten corners, home to the people who supported them. Throughout, you'll stop to order authentic Spanish cuisine at two neighborhood haunts.

In just a 40-minute train ride from Barcelona-Sants, you'll arrive in coastal Vilanova i la Geltrú. Here, you'll pick up a segment of Catalonia's long-distance GR 92 coastal trail to follow it into Sitges, another seaside town with a charming historic (and tiny) core.

The route is about 5.3 miles (8.5 km) and should take less than two hours without stopping if you're in good health (this doesn't include the time it takes to get to and from the respective train stations). That said, give yourself at least four hours to enjoy the walk, views, history, culture, and food, and add more time if the weather is fair and you plan to lie out on or swim at one of the protected beaches.
