Lake Titicaca Tour: Uros Floating Islands & Taquile Island, Lake Titicaca

4.9 (7 reviews)

Overview

Lake Titicaca, the largest freshwater lake in South America, straddles the border between western Bolivia and southern Peru. All around are amazing locales and rich culture. Interestingly, you can find deep culture on the water as well. This comes in the form of the floating Uros islands, home to the Uros indigenous people, believed to be one of the first ethnic groups to populate the Andean region. The Uros live on man-made floating islands constructed out reeds from the local totora plant.

This nine-hour tour embarks from Puno by boat to one of these floating islands to learn about the life and traditions of the Uros. Following this is a visit to Taquile, a small, non-mobile island. At a local restaurant, a traditional lunch of quinoa soup and fresh-caught fish will be served and after there will be time to explore the island. Taquile is unique in that it remained mostly isolated from the outside world until the 1950s, and as a result, the Taquileños enjoy a different way of life. Decisions on the island are made communally, there are no cars, and there is little electricity, which is just how the residents like it. The island is also famous for the exquisite weavings created by local artists.

Amazing to see the floating islands & learn about their way of life on Uros. Bonus--be sure to take your passport with you as you can get a passport stamp here. Taquile is beautiful and you have the opportunity to interact with the people who live here as you did in Uros. Nice lunch, boat was very comfortable, just know it's about an eight hour + day. Tips for future travelers

Bring your passport with you, so you can get it stamped as Peru does not stamp passports when you enter the country or leave.
