Overview

Take a step away from the center of Chania and spend a day exploring the slopes of Dikti Mountain and the Lasithi Plateau. Embark on a journey through traditional villages, stopping for coffee and meeting locals along the way. Take in the picturesque sight of eagles soaring over the mountains and goats grazing near the roadway as you explore the natural beauty of the region. After a 15-minute hike up Mount Spathi, you'll enter the mythical Zeus Cave. Then, indulge in a delicious spread of Greek meze accompanied by local wine at a traditional taverna. As the tour concludes, take in the breathtaking views of the north coast, and marvel at the oldest plane tree on the island and the historic Selinari Monastery.

What you'll do

Start your journey through the scenic Dikti Mountain range with a morning pickup from your accommodation, and get ready for an exciting adventure ahead. Enjoy the stunning views of traditional mountain villages as you ascend the mountains, with an experienced driver taking you through the best routes. During the journey, you'll stop at the best viewpoints for photo opportunities and enjoy coffee at an authentic taverna, making the most of your experience.

Next, you'll drive to the Lasithi Plateau. Here, you may spot eagles and vultures that nest in the area, adding to the already breathtaking views. You'll reach the base of Mount Spathi and hike up for 15 minutes, a distance of 6 miles (1 km), to reach the Zeus Cave's entrance. After the brief hike, take a moment to catch your breath as you soak in the breathtaking panoramic view of the plateau and inhale the fresh mountain air. It's a steep climb and may not suit elderly or disabled people. Once you get inside, you'll follow the 200 steps down into the cave and enjoy the mysterious atmosphere. 

Following your visit to the birthplace of Zeus, enjoy a traditional Cretan meze lunch with local wine at a local taverna. If you have any dietary preferences, inform your specialist, and they will make the necessary arrangements. After lunch, you'll start driving down the mountains while stunning panoramic views of the sparkling North coast and the magnificent Aposelemis Dam accompany you. 

To cap off, discover the ancient wonders of Kresi Village, home to the oldest plane tree on the island, believed to be over 2400 years old. Then, venture to the Selinari Monastery, dedicated to Agios Georgios, for a glimpse into the rich history and culture of Crete.
