What you'll do

Discover Córdoba's history with the help of a private guide, who will lead you down the city's ancient streets and explain its past under Roman, Muslim, and Christian rule. You'll start by visiting the city's most important monument, the Mezquita Catedral. Córdoba was the capital of Al-Andalus, the country's name when under Muslim rule for centuries. When the Christians conquered the Iberian Peninsula, most major cities removed the mosque to build a cathedral. Instead, Córdoba combined the two monuments, so you can visit a historic mosque and cathedral in one. With such a unique history, it's no surprise that this is one of Spain's most visited monuments.

After purchasing your tickets, your guide will lead you into the Mosque-Cathedral, where you can admire the hypostyle hall filled with two-toned arches taking you back to the time of Islamic architecture. Side-by-side and almost woven together are aspects of the cathedral, with its decorative nave and Gothic-style domed ceilings. You can also stroll through the courtyard covered with orange trees and admire the bell tower, originally the mosque's minaret.

Next, you'll make your way into Córdoba's old Jewish Quarter, which sits within the city's historic medieval quarter. The area is one of the most beautiful parts of the city's core, with twisting streets, hidden corners, and decorative features like courtyards, fountains, and gardens. As you walk through the district, learn about the city's Jewish heritage and past, then opt to visit important monuments like the 14th-century Córdoba Synagogue. You can also walk through the Calleja de la Hoguera (Bonfire Alley) and admire the art at the Capilla Mudéjar de San Bartolomé.

To conclude the tour, you'll stroll along Córdoba's medieval walls to the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos (Alcazar of the Christian Kings). Like other Alcazars in Spain, this one features numerous buildings, elaborate courtyards, and gardens. Your guide will take you into the complex, viewing spaces like the Hall of Mosaics, the Courtyard of the Women, and the Royal Baths of Doña Leonor.

Our guide, Maria (?), was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. She pointed out all kinds of details we would have missed or struggled to find. First holiday where we tried private tours and the personal touch, flexibility, and ability to ask lots of questions was great. We learned a lot more than we would have on our own or in a group.

Tips for future travelers

There is some walking, not surprisingly.

Another must-do tour, especially with a private guide as there is much to see and much to learn. Our guide did get much too wordy, with too much detail and minutiae that was not necessary, but with a guide we were able to make the most of our time Read more
