Overview
Kimkim's Take
- Owner George has run the hotel since he opened it in 2002 and his love for the space, combined with his kindness and hospitality, brings a fantastic level of service here.
- The property sits in front of a lush hill and it faces the sea, so it benefits from the sense of peace that comes with this natural beauty on all sides.
- Four adults-only villas offer something more luxurious and mature for couples or groups who want extra privacy.
- The location in a traditional and historic village brings something different, as guests can both enjoy the luxury of the hotel, while also exploring local Cretan life just outside.
- When the hotel was first built, there was no road leading to it and while there is a road now, it’s quite narrow and requires a tight turn to get onto it that may prove tough or stressful for those with bigger cars.
- The beautiful hillside location makes the hotel less accessible for those with mobility issues or wheelchairs, but speak to George before booking and see if there are appropriate options.
- The basic junior suites can feel a little small and dark, so consider another room type for some more space and light.
Additional Notes
When I first spoke to George on the phone, my immediate thought was “wow, what a kind and friendly man.” This impression was further solidified when I met him in person and listened to him take an unsolicited telemarketing call, which he turned down with such graciousness, you’d think he was talking to a beloved friend. It’s these qualities of kindness, compassion, and connection that George brings to his hotel, whether he’s engaging with guests, workers, or visitors like me.Authenticity
George, the owner of the Creta Blue, had a vision for the hotel when he was just 24. With his family’s help, he brought it to fruition and the hotel opened in 2002 and was the only one in the area. As he describes it, everyone thought he and his family were “the crazy people from Athens who came here to lose their money.” Luckily, others were wrong, as George has created a special space of luxury combined with tradition above this cobblestoned village.George and his staff bring Greek hospitality as well, which makes those who visit this family-run boutique hotel feel like family. All of those elements come together most clearly in the beautiful restaurant overlooking the village and sea, where guests can enjoy the dishes, landscape, and hospitality of Crete all at once.
Location
Located 10 minutes driving from the popular resort town of Hersonissos and 30 minutes from Heraklion and Knossos, Creta Blue enjoys the benefit of being both off-the-beaten-track and connected to popular sites. The hotel is in the mountain village of Koutouloufari, whose cobblestoned streets and stone arches makes it a great place for those who want to explore a more local side of Crete. The coast is just a mile away, so guests can start exploring nearby beaches in five minutes by car.Rooms & Bathrooms
Guests can take their pick of 28 rooms in the hotel’s original building or one of the four adults-only villas in a separate structure, which offer a bit more privacy and have their own shared pool. All of the villas have outdoor spaces such as a terrace or patio, can sleep up to eight people in each, and have either indoor or outdoor jacuzzis that have a view regardless. The deluxe suites with sea view are split-level spaces that mimic traditional Cretan architecture of a loft-style bed. The four penthouse suites are the most exclusive option in the original building. One of them has a large terrace with private sunbeds, so these are perfect for couples or those looking to relax in luxury. Room views vary between sea and garden and all rooms have a rain shower, while some options also have a tub.
