Pros

• The hotel's sensual, mature approach and aesthetic make it a good option for couples or younger travelers looking to be in the thick of things.

Cons

• The building overlooks the Agiou Titou Square, which can get quite lively during the high season. That plus the bar and restaurant under the hotel means noise is an issue here, so it’s better suited for folks looking for a bit of nightlife.
• This adults only hotel is not really oriented towards families but couples and groups of friends will find it to be a good option.
• While the hotel doesn’t offer parking, there is a parking lot nearby for guests with cars.

Authenticity

"Pagopoieion" (try saying that three times fast) means “ice factory” because as you’ll see from the large photograph on the ground floor, this building was an ice factory a century ago. George Mistiloglou left Istanbul in the early 1920s and relocated to Heraklion, where he turned the building that is now the Pagopoieion into a successful ice factory. You can feel some of that history in the hotel and taste it in the restaurant, where you can try traditional and favorite Cretan recipes.

Location

Guests will find the Pagopoieion in the middle of Agiou Tritou Square, just in front of the Byzantine Agios Tritos Cathedral, which dates back to the 10th century CE. This lively square is just a three-minute walk from Lion Square and is 10 minutes by foot to the Rocca a Mare Fortress. The Palace of Knossos is a 20-minute drive and the closest beach of Ammoudara is 15 minutes away by car. Ultimately, this location is perfect for anyone who wants a mix of history and convenience with access to both old and new Heraklion.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The Pagopoieion has eight rooms, which are decorated in warm tones with stone walls, wooden furniture, and a chic and modern aesthetic. The deluxe junior and junior suites are the largest, which can sleep up to three people with a sofabed. All of the rooms except for the double economy have balconies, which is a nice addition in the summer but can get quite loud. There aren’t appropriate family room options here and overall, the approach and attitude of the hotel is geared more towards couples and adults.
