Ryokan Tanoya, Kyoto

Standard
Traditional Kyoto townhouse turned hotel with private gardens, Western room options, and an authentic breakfast

Overview

Ryokan Tanoya is a charming, 100-year-old townhouse and former weaving shop turned hotel. As you enter the hotel, the sunlight shining through the ceiling onto the stone pavement sets a tranquil tone, and the green garden, adorned with Kasuga lanterns, offers a peaceful retreat. The hotel is a short walk from Kitano Tenmangu Shrine (18 minutes), the Nijō Castle (25 minutes), and a 6-minute drive from Kyoto International Manga Museum.

The rooms at Ryokan Tanoya exude a calming aura, with wood floors and ceilings and traditional sliding doors. Some rooms have garden views, allowing you to immerse yourself in the tranquil ambience without leaving your room. The Byakko no Ma room offers a garden view and bath, while Seiryu no Ma features a bed and an inner garden view. There are options to stay in a traditional Western-style room with raised beds and tables, and some options have private bathrooms with tubs, while others have shared facilities.

Every morning at Ryokan Tanoya begins with an Asian, vegetarian, or vegan breakfast served in the Salon de Tanoya. The salon also offers other meals and drinks, served on a collection of antique Japanese and Western plates. The proud Kyoto obanzai (traditional cuisine unique to the city), presented by the proprietress, lets you savor the true essence of home-cooked Kyoto cuisine.
