The Peech Boutique Hotel, Johannesburg

4.7 (6 reviews) · Comfort
Chic boutique hotel surrounded by gardens with two pools, a gym, a library, and award-winning dining options

Overview

The Peech Hotel, located in the chic suburb of Melrose in Johannesburg, is a true boutique hotel with a rich history. Originally a private residence in the 1950s, this property was transformed into The Peech Hotel in 2004, retaining its original charm while offering modern comforts. The hotel sits within a gated community, ensuring an extra layer of peace and tranquility, and is just across the street from James & Ethel Gray Park. A 15-minute drive will take you to the Apartheid Museum and the hip Melville district with its many trendy bars and eateries.

The hotel features 16 air-conditioned rooms that exude sophistication with Art Deco styling. Each room is designed for comfort, with accommodations ranging from Classic Rooms to Luxury Rooms, Peech Suites, and the Peech Villa. The rooms are spacious and cozy, retaining their individual charm with private balconies or patios and views of the garden. Bathrooms are equipped with rainfall showerheads and designer toiletries. The Peech Suites, with their expansive, open-plan living spaces, are particularly popular.

The Peech Hotel offers several amenities that make your stay memorable. This includes two outdoor swimming pools, a library, and a fitness gym. Dining is a notable experience at The Peech, with two restaurants on the property. The Garden Restaurant serves fresh, light, and seasonal dishes exclusively for in-house guests, while the fine-dining Basalt Restaurant offers a "farm-to-fork" culinary experience with ingredients sourced from Chef James Diack's family farm, Brightside, open on selected evenings.

We stayed here two nights during our "layover" in Johannesburg. This is a very pleasant, secure, hotel. The room we had was large, clean, modern, and very neat. No complaints whatsoever. We stayed here two nights during our "layover" in Johannesburg. This is a very pleasant, secure, hotel. The room we had was large, clean, modern, and very neat. No complaints whatsoever. The breakfast buffet provided LOTS of cold options and hot options could be ordered off the menu. We had two dinners at the hotel. The first was excellent (the chef came out and we acknowledged his fine work). Unfortunately the second dinner was a bit disappointing -- the meat entree was not a good cut and was not cooked the way we had asked for it. To their credit they did offer to redo it or remove it from the bill (we declined both offers).

Authenticity & Character
The main building appears to be a repurposed estate, which is quite charming. The reception area is very "home" like with sofas and chairs, a fireplace, bookcases, and the adjoining dining room. The buildings with the guest rooms are much more modern. The grounds are very beautiful -- like a manicured garden. There is also a very nice pool (although we did not use it). The hotel has it's own restaurant (where we ate our meals); it's really more of a dining room catering to the hotel guests. But adjacent to the hotel (in the same building) is the very upscale Basalt Restaurant (both use the same kitchen). The first night we were not aware of there being two restaurants and ate in the "dining room" (which was just fine). I had seen pictures of the Basalt Restaurant and was surprised that was not what this area (where we did eat) looked liked. Then we found out about there being the second restaurant. Unfortunately, our second day was a Sunday and the Basalt Restaurant was closed. (I wouldn't be surprised if a table needs to be booked well in advance anyway.) The Basalt Restaurant recently won the "Best Hotel Restaurant in South Africa" for 2024 (https://thepeech.co.za/haute-grandeur-award/).
Location
Very quiet and seemingly secure location. There is a park nearby and a small shopping area (including several restaurants) a block or two away. The vibrant Melrose Arch District is about a 15-20 minute walk away. Otherwise the area is quite residential.
Staff
Like virtually every lodging we encountered in southern Africa, everyone was very friendly and helpful.
Cleanliness & Comfort
See comments above. Absolutely nothing negative to say about the guest room, the grounds and the main building.
