Cliffside hotel with panoramic caldera views, multiple eateries and pools, a spa, and exclusive villas with private pools

Overview

Volcano View Hotel, perched on a cliffside, offers a peaceful and picturesque escape in Santorini with views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea. Set six minutes by car from the bustling center of Fira, the hotel provides a quiet atmosphere while remaining accessible to local attractions through a complimentary shuttle service. The minimalist yet traditional Cycladic-designed rooms ensure a comfortable stay, with private balconies or terraces showcasing the island's famous sunsets. Guests can indulge in the hotel's amenities, which include three heated outdoor pools with ocean vistas, multiple dining options serving organic Greek cuisine, and a spa offering a range of relaxing treatments and a unique sunset massage experience.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • You'll have access to three large outdoor heated pools with ocean views and surrounded by lounge furniture.
  • The rooms at Volcano View Hotel are designed with minimalist aesthetics and traditional Cycladic elements, so the look is both stylish and authentic.
  • Each room features a private balcony or terrace offering panoramic views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea.
  • Hop on the free shuttle service to the center of Fira, a 6-minute ride, for easy exploration of local restaurants, shopping, and nightlife.
  • The hotel's De Sol Spa, located just across the street, offers a range of treatments and a sunset massage experience.
Cons
  • While you'll enjoy privacy and tranquility, the hotel is located about 2 miles (3.2 km) from the center of Fira, requiring a quick shuttle ride or a 25 to 30-minute walk.
  • If you're traveling with younger children, please note that the hotel welcomes teens aged 13 and above but doesn't permit younger kids or infants.

Authenticity

Volcano View Hotel, established in 1992 and renovated in 2021, offers an authentic Santorini experience with architecture that harmoniously blends in with the island's traditional Cycladic style. Carved directly into the mountainside, the hotel presents a minimalist design with modern furnishings while incorporating elements that reflect the local environment. Each room is unique, featuring alcoves and arches that mimic a cliffside cave-dwelling that pays homage to the island's geological heritage.

Location

Perched high on the volcanic caldera cliffs, Volcano View Hotel is situated outside the bustling center of Fira, offering a more secluded and private setting away from the crowds. Still, you can reach the town center in about 30 minutes on foot or six minutes via the complimentary shuttle. The location offers magnificent views of the Aegean Sea and Santorini's iconic neighboring volcanoes. The nearest beach is a 12-minute drive away, and the hotel's elevated position ensures every room enjoys a private balcony or terrace to soak in the memorable vistas.

Rooms & Bathrooms

At Volcano View Hotel, you'll find a range of accommodations from Superior Rooms to Grand Suites and private villas, all echoing a bright, airy, and minimalist aesthetic. Superior Rooms offer a cozy cave-like atmosphere with sea views from private balconies or terraces. The Junior Suites expand on comfort with spa baths set within curved alcoves, while the recently renovated Grand Suites provide a more spacious retreat with hydro-tubs. For an exclusive experience, the private villas have their own pools and hot tubs, offering additional luxury and privacy. The decor throughout is predominantly white, punctuated with tasteful color accents and natural materials.

Amenities

The hotel has a good-sized gym, De Sol Fitness Club, which is attached to the De Sol Spa and offers ocean views. The hotel has lots of stairs, and a porter service is available to carry luggage to rooms, but the property isn't easily navigable for travelers with limited mobility.

Family-Friendliness

Kids aged 13 and above are welcome at the hotel, but younger kids and infants are not permitted. The pools and breakfast buffet and popular with teens, and larger families can stay in spacious villas.

Other Highlights

The hotel's Caldera Restaurant serves traditional Greek breakfasts made with organic produce. The same restaurant, which features sea views, offers Greek and Mediterranean cuisine for lunch and dinner.

It's on a super busy road and there is no place to walk to from the hotel. It's a 20 minutes outside of the closest town, Fira, which was our least favorite part of the whole trip. Fira is busy with cruise ship tourists and it was filthy dirty with trash overflowing the trash cans and all over the streets. Streets are mostly T-shirt/postcard shops and fast food joints. Oia is a slightly better choice of city, with a bit nicer shops and restaurants, but it's 30 minutes and 40-50 Euros cab fare away from the hotel. Also, the hotel is filled with large busloads of tourists and honeymooners. Not a great choice for our family of three including our 17 year old daughter. There wasn't one other kid at the hotel.

You need to take a cab or bus or shuttle to get anywhere from this hotel. It's on a super busy road too far to walk to anything.

However, our room was super small. You could barely walk around the bed in the bedroom and the living area was uncomfortable.

Location
The Volcano View was a bit from the center of Oia but it was nice not to be in an over populated area. We walked to Oia a few times and the walk wasn’t too bad. Transports are always available and were arranged by the front desk.
