Best of Lake Atitlan

For more than a century, travelers have come to see one of Latin America's most photogenic landscapes. Tucked into the Sierra Madre, the turquoise waters of Lake Atitlán reflect the verdant hills and the towering volcanoes beyond, while small Indigenous villages ring the shoreline. There are plenty of activities in the area, though Atitlán is also an unrivaled spot to reconnect with nature while staying in a peaceful guesthouse overlooking the lake. 

Some of the best views are out on the water. Kayak excursions take you across the mirror-like waters with vantage points across the lake's trio of volcanoes. You can also climb above the clouds on hiking treks to lookouts over the mountain-studded horizon. Village tours provide an excellent introduction to the age-old cultures of the highlands, with insight into Maya traditions and folklore on visits to local markets, weaving co-ops and houses of worship.
