Best of Finse

Top itineraries and travel advice in and around Finse
Sitting roughly 4,000 feet (1,222 m) above sea level between Bergen and Oslo, remote Finse is accessible only by train connection at the highest station on the entire Norwegian railway. There are no roads up to this mountaintop spot, but there is plenty of snow, ski possibilities, and hiking almost year-round. Take a bike ride through Rallarvegen from Finse to Flåm or Haugastøl, or opt for a guided tour of the Blåisen glacier. It’s also a starting point for the Aurlandsdalen Valley trek, a three-day trek from mountains to sea between Finse and Aurland.

Previous kimkim travelers have gone kiting or snow sailing at Finsevatn. You can also go paddling on the icy arctic waters, then warm up at the Finse 1222 hotel, so named for Finse’s position above sea level. It serves as the center of town and has been in business for more than 100 years, through bombing, violent storms, and pandemics.
