How to Get from Lake Bled to Kobarid
View Map
Lake Bled is just 55 miles from Kobarid, making the journey easily doable in the same trip. The most convenient way to reach Kobarid is by rental car, which takes 2 hours and curves around Triglav National Park. For those with a few extra days to spare, this 8-day tour explores the best of the region, including Lake Bled, the Julian Alps, and the Soča River Valley.
If you prefer public transportation, a train/taxi combination is another option. It’s faster than driving but requires a stop in a nearby town about 20 minutes from Kobarid.
The regional bus is a budget-friendly alternative, but only offers one departure per day and increases your journey time to four hours.
The most convenient way to reach Kobarid from Lake Bled is by rental car, driving south around Triglav National Park and into the scenic Soča River Valley. This route takes about two hours, weaving along country roads and through small villages. Nearby Lake Bohinj makes a great detour for a picnic lunch.
Another route is to drive north through Austria and Italy. Despite being a longer distance (79 miles), this route takes about the same time as staying in Slovenia thanks to a combination of modern highways (E61/A11/A2). Luckily, Slovenia, Austria, and Italy are all in the Schengen Zone and traveling within the three doesn’t require any border stops. It may, however, require an additional fee with your car rental and/or highway tolls.
Eventually, you’ll connect to Predil Pass in Triglav National Park, passing through the scenic alpine town of Bovec (a great stop for a meal) before reaching Kobarid.
Less convenient, but faster than driving, is the train. It offers several departures per day but doesn’t take you directly to Kobarid. The train departs Bled from its Jezero station, which is located on the western side of the lake. If you are staying in the main town of Bled, you will need to either walk (a 30-minute scenic walk on a designated path around the lake) or take a taxi (less than 10 minutes). Further, the train only goes as far as Most na Soči. From here, you can take a 20-minute taxi to Kobarid.
The slowest and least convenient option is to go by regional bus, although it does take you directly to Kobarid. But keep in mind that there is only one departure per day, leaving Bled in the late afternoon and arriving Kobarid around 8:00 pm.
