Liberia and Tamarindo are both located in the Guanacaste Province and within hours of each other. The most direct way to get to this coastal surf town in the north of the Nicoya Peninsula is by private transfer. It's an easy 48-mile (78 km) drive down Route 21 to Route 55. In the town of Belen, you can choose to stay on Route 21 and come into Tamarindo by way of Route 152 as well.

It is possible to fly direct but travel time ends up being about the same as driving. The airport in Liberia is the country's second-biggest so expect crowds and delays. The flight itself is very short - you'll spend more time getting to and from the airports.

The cheapest option, that still gets you there in a decent amount of time, is a taxi. In Costa Rica, this is a very reliable and convenient way to travel, especially around the Peninsula. You'll have a driver who knows the best routes to take as well as the option to hire the car if you want to explore other attractions around Tamarindo.

By Private Transfer

Duration: 1.5 - 2 hours

Going by private transfer, in this case, will likely be more enjoyable than a plane ride and less of a hassle. Instead of waiting in long lines at the airport you'll only have to sit back and relax. Route 21 is a major road and a smooth ride most of the way. If you're feeling adventurous, your driver can always suggest other side roads to take that'll bring you through other places of interest.

If you are up for a stop for some food and drinks, restaurant El Jardin is 10 minutes from Liberia, on route 21 towards Tamarindo. The vibe is a bit on the touristy side, with many vans and buses making a stop there. For a more authentic experience, stop at a small roadside restaurant like Soda Lula, which offers delicious basic meals and you'll find yourself surrounded by locals. It is located approximatly 15 minutes into your drive along Route 21.

By Taxi

Duration: 1.5 - 2 hours

A taxi ride is the next best option after private transfer. Again, you won't have to spend time on check-in and security at the airport. Liberia is a big town so finding a reputable taxi company with licensed drivers and functioning meters won't be hard. You'll have a car to yourself for the relatively short trip and a driver who may be able to provide insight on things to do and see in Tamarindo.

By Plane

Duration: 1-1.5 hours

The Liberia International Airport is about 20 minutes from the city center so you'll have to catch a taxi or bus to get to your departure terminal. Actual flight time is less than 15 minutes. Tamarindo is a very popular destination on the Peninsula so book in advance in busy months if you can. Once you get there, it's a short ride into town from the Tamarindo Airport.
