El Calafate is a little over 625 miles (1,005 km) away from Puerto Madryn, and the easiest way to make the trip is by plane. Though Puerto Madryn is a popular wildlife destination, most flights arrive and depart from Trelew Airport, one hour away.

Most travelers take a shuttle or book a private transfer from Puerto Madryn to Trelew Airport (REL), as very few flights operate out of the tiny Puerto Madryn Airport. The trip to Trelew is easy and takes an hour—private transfers will pick you up directly from your hotel, and shuttles leave from the city center every 30 minutes.
Once you land at El Calafate Airport (FTE) you can choose between a shuttle bus, private transfer, taxi or rental car to go to the city center, which is 12.5 miles (20 km) away and takes about 30 minutes to reach.
