Boutique hotels offer a slightly elevated atmosphere that feels personal, cozy, and historical at the same time, but you don't need to spend a lot to enjoy this type of stay. Some of the best mid-range boutique hotels in Madrid offer similar amenities to those in the luxury range, plus they're centrally located, making it easy to explore the city on foot.

CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha

CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha is aptly named as it's a hip upgrade to a 19th-century palace house, providing a fun and historic boutique experience. Enjoy charming original elements like the main iron staircase and decorative ceiling. The location adds to the coolness, as you'll be just down the street from Antón Martín Market, a great place to try a few authentic bites and watch locals truly do their daily shopping. You'll also be within walking distance of numerous other sites, like the Literary Quarter, Royal Palace, Catedral de la Almudena, Plaza Mayor, and Puerta del Sol.

Choose from six room types, all with a bright, airy, and minimalist feel, plus spacious bathrooms with stylish tiling. You'll enjoy light-wood flooring, walls, vintage paneling, lighting, and floor-to-ceiling windows. Upgrade to a suite if you want to feel like you live here—they're huge! Some suites offer soaking tubs, living rooms, separate bedrooms, and private terraces.

The on-site restaurant serves breakfast in the dining room or on the beautiful outdoor covered patio. The inner courtyard also features an outdoor pool, a lounge with a fountain, and plenty of plants. Sneak into the cozy lounge bar for a nightcap or hang out in the open-air lounge across from the reception. Learn more

Only You Boutique Hotel

Only YOU Boutique Hotel has won several international design awards, and the moment you step into the lobby, you'll understand why. This might be Madrid's hippest boutique hotel, a 19th-century mansion converted into a stylish, hip, and eclectic accommodation that feels like its own city with many eateries and common spaces. For example, the lounge was once the old Padrino bookshop, and the property maintained that cozy past with bookshelves, sofas, and a grand fireplace.

The rooms at Only YOU Boutique Hotel definitely match the property's colorful, bold, and eclectic style. You'll find 10 room categories, all offering bright and spacious units with large bathrooms. Some have iron balconies overlooking the neighborhood, while the loft category features sloping wood-beamed ceilings. As one of the best family-friendly hotels in Madrid, you and your crew can upgrade to superb rooms or suites to add fireplaces, separate living rooms, private terraces, libraries, and even the option for multi-level units.

The hotel has a little bit of everything, including a Thai spa and four eateries offering different menus and ambience. Celicioso is the on-site gluten-free restaurant (popular with the locals at lunch), whereas the YOUnique Restaurant puts a spin on classic regional dishes and offers an extensive drink menu. Head to cozy El Padrino for tapas and craft beer, and hang out in the colorful YOUnique Lounge with a light snack and drink. Learn more

7 Islas Hotel

Serene rooms that channel the islands (Photo courtesy of 7 Islas Hotel)

You'll be surrounded by creativity at 7 Islas, a boutique hotel and art gallery in one, as the local Kikekeller's studio designed the entire property. As a result, you get a blend of trendy modern art and simple, serene spaces. Enjoy a daily breakfast buffet in the beautiful dining area, sip drinks at the relaxed lobby bar (sitting near the electric firepit in colder months), or rent vintage bikes to explore the city.

The hotel owner is from the Canary Islands, and you'll find relaxed vibes in the rooms, with light wood and bright whites mixed with dark elements and unique decor. Bathrooms are clean and spacious with amenities from the natural brand Malin + Goetz. The standard option ("easy rooms") is small, so upgrade to a deluxe room for more space. Or, you can opt for the penthouse room, which features a private terrace with sun loungers.

You'll find 7 Islas in the hip Malasaña district, a historic neighborhood with locally owned coffee shops, vintage clothing stores, artisan shops, bakeries, tapas bars, and restaurants. Since the hotel is only two blocks from Gran Vía, you can easily stroll to famous sites like the Royal Palace, Puerta del Sol, and El Retiro Park. Learn more

Hotel Vincci The Mint

Bright, bold, and vintage, Hotel Vincci The Mint is a great mid-range choice directly on Gran Vía. Channeling the famous avenue's glamorous past, the hotel feels like a glitzy step back in time. Enjoy the lobby bar (serving drinks even at check-in), cozy lounge, or a rooftop terrace, where you can enjoy snacks and drinks from a food truck. If you're a soccer fan, the bar also promises to play all the big games.

All rooms, even those in the standard category, offer a comfortable, bright, and stylish atmosphere. The bathrooms are large with elegant gold fixtures and showers, though the suites have options for tubs. If you truly want to take in the property's glam, choose a suite offering private terraces and cozy sofas. These spacious suites (and the fun rooftop) are what make this property one of the best mid-range family-friendly hotels in Madrid

We love the hotel's fun aesthetic, but we're also fans of its location on Gran Vía, typically reserved for luxury properties. You'll be just a few blocks from the Círculo de Bellas Artes and Neptune Fountain, plus within walking distance of other major sites, including Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, and the Royal Palace. Pestana Plaza Mayor Madrid

Yes, you can stay directly on Plaza Mayor—it's an option, thanks to the Pestana Plaza Mayor Madrid, which occupies part of the famous square's perimeter. Unsurprisingly, the views of the city's most famous square are incredible. You can enjoy them from your room (if you request one with plaza views), the large library lounge, the outdoor terrace on the square, or the rooftop terrace.

Even the standard rooms feel bright, colorful, and plush, though the bathrooms are small, with a sink inside the bedroom. We recommend a slight upgrade to a superior room or higher category for a bit more space. Suites add nice perks like soaking tubs, sofas, and exposed brick walls.

There's a lot to keep you busy at Pestana Plaza Mayor. To start, enjoy your daily breakfast in the airy inner courtyard, which feels more like a garden terrace. Then head to the spa with its indoor pool, splashing among preserved arches and buttresses. If you prefer to swim outside, there's also a rooftop pool and lounge overlooking the historic skyline. When hungry, grab a meal at the on-site restaurant or lobby bar. Learn more

Only YOU Hotel Atocha

Though we don't usually recommend the same hotel brand twice in one city, we had to make an exception with Only YOU Hotel Atocha. Just like its sister property in Chueca, the property offers a fun, unique, and eclectic option, but this time just across the street from Atocha train station. The hotel is a great pick for those with a late train arrival or early departure. Still, you'll be within walking distance of nearly all the city sites and just one block from the southern edge of El Retiro Park.

Set in a historic building on Paseo Infanta Isabel that once functioned as a pseudo-market hall, the renovated space pays homage to its past with a few unique elements. Enjoy vintage tiling, ironwork, industrial lighting, glass walls, and fun quirks like a breakfast served outside a hut and an onsite barbershop. You'll also find an Asian fusion restaurant in the lobby, plus the restaurant and bar, Sép7ima. Enjoy breakfast on an outdoor terrace, relax in the plant-filled lounge, and work off any jetlag at the 24-hour gym.

As for the rooms, you can choose from deluxe rooms, premium rooms, and suites, all offering bright, cozy, and colorful spaces. All units also channel that raw feel with exposed brick walls, darkwood furniture, and industrial lighting. The bathrooms, however, can feel a little too vintage and could use just a light refresh.
