Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Colombo, Transfer to Hatton

Transfer to Hatton, nestled in Sri Lanka's central highlands

Welcome to Sri Lanka! Touch down in Colombo, Sri Lanka's largest city, and meet your driver for a 3.5-hour transfer to Hatton, your gateway to the lush tea country. Check in at Ceylon Tea Trails, a luxury hotel that's home to five historic tea-planter bungalows. You'll be staying in the Castlereagh Bungalow overlooking the tranquil Castlereagh Lake. Spend the rest of the day enjoying the amenities, like the infinity pool and Jacuzzi. Your rate includes all meals and daily afternoon tea served by your butler, so you'll never go hungry here.

Day 2: Guided Tour of the Dunkeld Tea Factory, Enjoy a Tea-Infused Dinner

Sample different varieties of Ceylon tea at the Dunkeld Tea Factory

After breakfast, set off on a tour of the Dunkeld Tea Factory, nestled within the hotel's 4,942 acres (2,000 ha). Meet your host, a resident tea planter, and learn about the history of Ceylon tea, the lifestyle of early colonial settlers, how the factory works, and the secret to crafting a refined cup of tea as you explore the property. End the tour with a tasting session to savor the different varieties while enjoying sweeping views of the surrounding plantations.

In the evening, head to the hotel's restaurant for a tea-infused dinner. Each dish is creatively infused with the distinctive notes of locally grown tea and Sri Lankan flavors. From delicate tea-smoked meats to aromatic tea-infused sauces and desserts, you're sure to enjoy this harmonious meal overlooking the tea plantation.

Day 3: Transfer to Arugam Bay, Relax on Pottuvil Point Beach

Unwind at Pottuvil Point Beach after your six-hour transfer

Trade Sri Lanka's central highlands for its southeastern coast as you transfer six hours to Arugam Bay, a vibrant coastal town renowned for its world-class surf breaks. Check in at Jetwing Surf, an eco-friendly boutique hotel located directly on Pottuvil Point Beach. The rest of the day is free for you to relax by the pool or on the white-sand beach. The hotel also offers yoga classes on request, which is a great way to unwind after the long drive. For dinner, head to one of the beachfront restaurants for fresh seafood or visit the hotel's restaurant, Rella, for a selection of global favorites and local specialties.

Day 4: Bird-Watching at Kumana National Park, Surfing at Whisky Point

Conquer the mellow waves at Whisky Point

Start your day with a visit to Whisky Point, just north of Arugam Bay, to conquer the waves. The area is known for its consistent waves and laid-back vibe, so it's the perfect introduction to Sri Lanka's surf culture. Swells here can rise over 13 feet (4 m) during heavier storms, but that's almost unheard of during the regular season (May to September). Grab your board and paddle into the water, taking advantage of the smooth right-hand waves that are great for both beginners looking to improve their skills and seasoned surfers seeking a fun ride.

In the afternoon, opt for a bird-watching tour of Kumana National Park, a haven for both endemic and migratory avian species. The lush wetlands, lagoons, and mangroves create an ideal habitat for birds, and during the peak migratory season (April to July), over 250 species have been recorded in the park. Depending on when you visit, you may see pelicans, painted storks, herons, and spoonbills. Around Kumana Villu, a 494-acre (200 ha) mangrove swamp, you're more likely to see waterbirds like purple swamphen, waterfowl, and the red-faced malkoha.

Day 5: Transfer to Pasikudah, Visit Coconut Cultural Park (Optional)

Visit Coconut Cultural Park and learn about the integral part coconut palms play in Sri Lanka

Say goodbye to Arugam Bay this morning as you meet your driver for a 3.5-hour transfer to Pasikudah, an idyllic resort town on the eastern coast. Check in at your luxury-tented hotel situated on the untouched shores of Kalkudah Beach and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure. Jetwing Sands is the only hotel on the 9.3-mile (15 km) stretch of beach, so you may have it all to yourself if you choose to spend the afternoon there.

Should you want to do a bit of sightseeing, head to Coconut Cultural Park, dedicated to celebrating the coconut palm and its many uses. Learn how locals use every part of the coconut tree, from its fruits and oil to its fibers and wood. Peruse the interactive exhibits and demonstrations showcasing traditional methods of coconut harvesting, processing, and crafting. Then, stroll among various species of coconut palms and tropical plants. Immerse yourself in the experience with hands-on activities, like making coconut oil or crafting souvenirs from coconut shells.

Day 6: Snorkeling in Kalkudah Beach, Bicycle Tour of Batticaloa's Lagoons

Snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of Kalkudah Beach

Change into your bathing suit, don your snorkeling gear, and wade out to the bay in front of the hotel to explore the underwater world. The crystal-clear visibility makes it an ideal spot for snorkeling enthusiasts of all levels. You may see schools of tropical fish among the coral, sea turtles gliding gracefully through the water, and even moray eels hidden within the crevices. If you have diving experience, opt for a guided excursion for a deeper exploration.

In the afternoon, hop on a bike and cycle along the coast to Batticaloa, a picturesque city known for its serene and shallow lagoons. Pedal past emerald rice fields, local fishermen going about their daily tasks, and various animals like buffalo and water birds. Along the way, you'll pass the city's three lagoons: Batticaloa Lagoon, Valaichchenai Lagoon, and Pottuvil Lagoon, where you can look out at the tranquil waters, towering coconut palms, and traditional fishing boats. As you continue through the area's rustic villages, stop to chat with the locals to learn about their culture.

Day 7: Enjoy a Free Day in Pasikudah

Keep your cameras ready in case you spot a spinner dolphin spin as it leaps from the water

Wake up to a cotton-candy pink sunrise and enjoy a leisurely breakfast on the beach. Then, spend the rest of the day by the pool and bar lounge, sipping refreshing cocktails as you recharge your batteries. You can also go on excursions in the area, like a boat tour in search of local marine life. May to September is the prime time to spot blue whales and sperm whales, but you have a chance of seeing spinner and bottlenose dolphins year round.

When darkness falls, return to the hotel for a farm-to-table dining experience or visit one of the local seafood shacks along the beach to indulge in dishes like grilled fish or calamari. End the night with a Sri Lankan dessert, like kokis (deep-fried cookies) or coconut pudding, then grab a glass of wine from the hotel bar to enjoy on your private terrace.

Day 8: Transfer to Sigiriya, Tour the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa

Admire the rock-cut Buddha statues in Polonnaruwa's Gal Vihara

Leave the coast behind as you transfer 2.5 hours inland to the village of Sigiriya, nestled at the base of Lion Rock. On the way, stop at Polonnaruwa, one of the island's ancient royal capitals. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is known for its well-preserved ruins, which include intricate temples, palaces, and statues dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. As you explore, you'll come across the site's highlight—Gal Vihara, a temple complex carved from a massive granite rock face.

Pause to marvel at the temple's centerpiece—a colossal reclining Buddha statue accompanied by two seated Buddha figures and an impressive standing Buddha. Be sure to see the Royal Palace, once the majestic residence of the Sinhalese kings. Most of the original structure has weathered over time, but you can still see the impressive palace walls, the expansive central courtyard, and the intricately designed royal chambers.

After exploring the ancient capital, complete the drive to your eco-friendly hotel in Sigiriya, designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings. On the walk to your villa, you'll pass tranquil water gardens, verdant greenery, and an outdoor pool. When you get hungry, opt for dinner indoors or al fresco overlooking the gardens.

Day 9: Visit the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Afternoon Safari at Minneriya National Park

Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Climb 1,200 steps to visit the UNESCO-listed Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Spend the morning exploring another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, an ancient citadel built by King Kashyapa in the fifth century. The ascent to the fortress involves climbing a series of well-preserved staircases, passing by fascinating frescoes of celestial maidens and elaborate water gardens. At the summit, enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, then discover the fortress itself, with its remnants of royal palaces, moats, and defensive walls. If you find climbing the 1,200 steps to the top too challenging, opt for a less strenuous hike to the halfway point instead.

In the afternoon, transfer 30 minutes to Minneriya National Park for a Jeep safari. The park is home to Minneriya Wewa, one of the oldest reservoirs in Sri Lanka, which attracts large herds of wild elephants from all over the country during the dry season (July to October). Outside of this time, you can still see elephants in the park, as well as other wildlife like leopards, spotted deer, and wild boar. Don't forget to look up, as the park is home to over 150 bird species, including the Sri Lankan junglefowl, painted stork, and gray heron.

Day 10: Transfer to Colombo, Explore Sri Lanka's Judicial Capital

Appreciate the striking architecture of the 20th-century Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque

It's time to transfer four hours back to the island's judicial capital, Colombo, for your flight home tomorrow. Before you go, you'll have some free time to explore Sri Lanka's largest city on your own. A good place to start is Galle Face Green, a seaside promenade offering a picturesque setting for leisurely walks. Then, visit some of the city's landmarks, like Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, also known as the "Red Mosque" for its distinctive red and white striped facade. Admire the ornate minarets and striking Moorish architecture before continuing to Pettah Market.

Wander the maze of narrow lanes lined with a treasure trove of goods, including spices, textiles, traditional crafts, and electronics, making it a prime spot for finding souvenirs. You'll also discover delicious street food in the market, like kottu roti (chopped roti stir-fried with vegetables, meat, and spices). Keep aside a little room for dinner, though, so you can end the night in Kollupitiya, a vibrant neighborhood known for its eclectic mix of dining options. Choose from an array of upscale restaurants, bustling bistros, and local favorites for your final dinner in Sri Lanka.

Day 11: Depart Colombo

Admire the golden Buddha statue in the center of Viharamahadevi Park

Wake up early to continue exploring Colombo on your own before your flight home today. You could head to the Colombo National Museum, the largest museum in the country, to peruse the vast collection of artifacts, including royal regalia, intricate sculptures, and traditional weaponry. If museums aren't your thing, go for a leisurely walk in Viharamahadevi Park instead. Spanning over 30 acres (12 ha), this well-maintained park features lush lawns, winding paths, and serene water features. When it's time, meet your driver and transfer to the airport for your flight home. Safe travels!
