Day 1: Arrive in Sapporo, Transfer to Noboribetsu

See colorful demon statues guarding temples at Noboribetsu

Welcome to Japan! Your flight arrives in Sapporo, located on the northern island of Hokkaido. You'll meet your driver and make the 1.5-hour drive to the city of Noboribetsu, known for its natural hot springs or onsens, primeval forests, and fanciful demon statues decorating the city center. Once you've checked in at your hotel and had a chance to regroup, head out to see all that this family-friendly destination has to offer.

Considered one of the best onsen towns in Japan, you'll find many types of hot springs here, and several hotels offer day-use bathing hours for guests. Visit Daiichi Takimotokan Hotel for five different springs and 35 separate baths, a waterslide, and a Jacuzzi. Be sure to stop at the hotel lobby to see the Ookanabo, a large animatronic statue that comes to life at the top of every hour, telling the story of the Peach Boy, Momotaro, and his encounter with demons.

If the kids are interested in marine life, head to Noboribetsu Marine Park. Home to more than 2,000 different species, you can see dolphins, sea lions, penguins, and a wide variety of fish and other tropical creatures. A free shuttle takes you from town to the park, and it's an excellent way for the kids to burn off some energy after the long flight. Tonight, relax at your hotel or enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 2: Family Tour of Noboribetsu Hell Valley & Date Jidaimura Theme Park

Explore the mystical Hell Valley in Noboribetsu

Today, you'll explore some of Japan's most ancient hot springs with a guided tour of Jigokudani, otherwise known as Hell Valley. Meet your guides and head to the valley, which is located just above the city and is the source of most of the hot springs in town. There are multiple trails you can walk on here, which take you through forests and past the hot steam vents and sulfurous streams, a constant reminder of the volcanic origins of this region. For more intense physical activity, hike deep into the hills to the River Oyunuma Natural Footbath, where you can ditch your shoes and soak your feet in the hot water!

Later today, take a visit to Date Jidaimura Noboribetsu, a cultural theme park dedicated to the history of Japan's Edo period. Step inside and get transported back in time, learning about the lives of people in this time period, trying local food, and watching traditional performances that include the fierce battles of the ninjas and elegant dances. Little ones' imaginations are sure to be sparked by the lively antics of the performers, and you'll all come away with a deeper understanding of Japan's storied past.

Day 3: Transfer to Toyako, Lake Toya & Volcano Museum, Bears of Showa Shinzan

Say hello to brown bears at Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch

Your journey continues as you depart for Toyako, located near the shores of the volcanic Lake Toya. Your guide will collect your family from your hotel after checkout and you'll make the one-hour scenic drive. Once you've gotten settled at your new accommodations, you'll head to Shikotsu-Toya National Park for a sightseeing cruise around the lake.

End at Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch, where you'll visit the brown bears that live here and learn about their habits, watching them play or laze around in the sun. The ranch also offers a feeding event that guests can participate in, and there's a special observation room where the whole family can get an inside peek at the bears' daily lives.
