Overview
Your starting point is Midgard Base Camp, located in Hvolsvöllur. Situated 65 miles east of Reykjavik and centrally located in southern Iceland near the Ring Road, Midgard will provide you with your gear for the day. You'll borrow a fat bike (a bike with oversized tires built for rugged off-roading) and riding equipment, including your personal GPS to track your location and route. Then set off through the rocky terrain and swamps in and around Hvolsvöllur. If you're up for more action after your bike ride, go on an optional guided hike up Príhyrningur Mountain. Whether you choose the added hike or not, there's always time for a restorative rooftop swim back at Midgard at the end of the day!
Detailed Itinerary
Meet your tour operators at Midgard Base Camp to pick up your fat bike and set off on this self-guided tour to explore your surroundings. Head 10 miles down a local fishermen's trail to one of Iceland's most famous salmon rivers, Eystri Ranga. Stop along the way to explore the rugged terrain and shallow caves. Though you're free to explore the area as you choose, this two-hour route is recommended.
If you have the energy to spare, feel free to extend your ride to a three-hour route. Roam around the rich green countryside and splash through streams on your sturdy bike.
Afterward, meet your guide in time for a short hike up Príhyrningur Mountain (1,476-foot elevation gain), before heading back to Hvolsvöllur. Reward yourself and soothe weary muscles with a post-ride (and post-hike) swim in Midgard Base Camp's heated rooftop pool.
