Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Rio de Janeiro, Explore at Leisure
Welcome to Brazil! Once you land in Rio de Janeiro, meet your guide in the arrivals hall for a transfer to your hotel in Copacabana. Referred to as "Carioca" by the locals, Rio's beauty, vibrant cultural scene, and geographical diversity of mountains, tropical forests, and incredible beaches have long inspired artists and composers from all over the world. After checking into your hotel, enjoy the rest of the day exploring the city and its environs at your leisure.
Whether you're an adventure traveler, nature lover, or arts and culture enthusiast, you'll discover abundant tourist attractions and leisure activities to explore. Soak in the local culture, taste the regional cuisine, and experience the arts as you savor your first day and evening in Rio.
Day 2: Full-Day Guided Tour of Rio de Janeiro
Get to know Rio's main attractions on a full-day city tour, visiting landmarks and natural monuments. Head with your guide to the summit of the mountain, Corcovado, where the statue of Christ the Redeemer is located, then ride the cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain for more incredible views. You'll also stop at Maracanã Stadium to learn about the history of the World Cup Finals from 1950 and 2014 CE and the Sambadrome, home of the Samba School Parades performances during the Rio de Janeiro Carnival.
Continue to the Metropolitan Cathedral of São Sebastião, the city's patron saint. Admire its pyramidal shape, which nods to the religious structures of pre-Columbian America, before heading to a local steakhouse (with vegetarian options included) for a buffet lunch. Visit the hill, Morro da Urca, located by the old Casino of Urca, then explore the city center, climb the colorful tile-covered staircase, Escadaria Selarón, and cross the 18th-century aqueduct, Arcos da Lapa.
Day 3: Helicopter Tour Over Rio, Fly to Manaus
See Rio from a different perspective this morning as you set off on a 30-minute helicopter flight above the city. As you ascend, the city's iconic landmarks, like Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer, come into view. Admire the geographical beauty of the city with its lush greenery, jagged mountains, and golden-sand beaches. After a whirlwind ride, return to your hotel for a transfer to the airport and a domestic flight to Manaus, the capital of the Amazonas. On arrival, meet your driver for a transfer to your hotel, where you can relax for the rest of the evening.
Day 4: Transfer to Amazon Turtle Lodge via Car & Boat Cruise
Prepare for an early wake-up call as you leave Manaus for the 3.5-hour journey to the Amazon Turtle Lodge. Head with your driver to the Port of Ceasa and board a speedboat to the Encontro das Águas (Meeting of the Rivers), the point where the Negro and Solimões rivers converge to form the mighty Amazon. Watch as the dark waters of Rio Negro flow beside the sandy hues of Rio Solimões without mixing and look out for the curious river dolphins that frequent the area. Disembark and travel 40 minutes to the Rio Araça to hop on another boat for the 50-minute trip to the lodge.
Cruise past native villages and abundant wildlife, such as alligators and monkeys. When you arrive at the Amazon Turtle Lodge around midday, enjoy a delicious buffet lunch with freshwater fish and exotic fruits from the Amazon. Then, board a speedboat to discover the area. Listen as the guide highlights the local flora and fauna, and keep an eye out for glimpses of toucans, macaws, river otters, and even sloths if you're lucky. Cruise through hidden lagoons and dense jungle landscapes to return to the lodge, where you can relax for the rest of the evening.
Day 5: Amazon Turtle Lodge Birdwatching, Jungle Trek & Canoe Trip
Wake up before dawn to watch the Amazon come alive at sunrise on a bird-watching tour. Perched along the banks of the river, the lodge offers an obstructed view of the awakening rainforest. Listen for birdsong and watch as the first rays of light pierce the dense canopy, transforming the horizon into warm hues of pink, orange, and gold. Once the sun has risen, return to the lodge for breakfast, then put on your hiking shoes as you set off on a jungle trek. Follow your guide through the dense forest and listen as they teach you about the thriving ecosystem and its biodiversity.
Immerse yourself in the experience by learning how to climb trees, use vines as ropes, and find food and water in the wild. Return to the lodge to refuel with a delicious lunch, then jump in a canoe to explore the area from the water. As you paddle, look for colorful birds flying ahead or playful monkeys following along on the shore. Get up close and personal with remote corners of the jungle that are inaccessible by other means. After an action-packed day, head back to rest and enjoy dinner.
Chat with a local specialist who can help organize your trip.
Day 6: Amazon Turtle Lodge Culture Tour, Piranha Fishing & Caiman Night Cruise
After breakfast, set off on a cultural immersion excursion to a traditional Caboclo village. Meet the Caboclo community, a group of people with mixed Indigenous Brazilian and European ancestry, and learn about their customs and culture. Watch as they demonstrate traditional practices like fishing, crafting, and cultivating the land, and immerse yourself in the experience by collecting your own fruits, vegetables, herbs, and Brazil nuts. Then, sit down to enjoy a meal made with your gathered ingredients.
Join some villagers for a piranha fishing trip using simple fishing gear this afternoon. Jump on a boat and navigate the intricate waterways, then attach your bait and cast your line into the water, waiting patiently for a bite from this carnivorous fish. Then, take your catch back to the village and help prepare a feast with the Caboclo people.
Finish the day with a canoe adventure, looking for wildlife, like the caimans (small alligators) who like to come out at night. With your guide, you can help catch a caiman with your bare hands or (if you want to avoid getting up close and personal with these predators) take pictures from the canoe. Finally, you'll farewell the Caboclo villagers and return to the lodge for your last night in the Amazon.
Day 7: Transfer to North Pantanal, Explore at Leisure
This morning, say goodbye to the Amazon and embark on a journey to Cuiabá, the capital of Brazil's Mato Grosso state. This city is the gateway to the Pantanal, the largest wetland ecosystem in the world. And upon arrival, that's exactly where you'll go. Meet your driver in the city, then transfer by vehicle for three hours up the Transpantaneira Highway.
Head north, passing winding rivers, quaint villages, and diverse flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for anteaters or capybara meandering through the grass. When the road gives way to the Pantanal's vast wetlands, you've arrived. Settle into your base for the next few days, a fazenda—a traditional plantation found throughout the country—and sit down to enjoy dinner as a group.
Day 8: Jeep, Canoe & Horseback Adventures in North Pantanal
Spend the next several days discovering the pristine wetlands of the Pantanal, starting with a Jeep safari along the Transpantaneira. Navigate through the landscape, looking for caimans sunning on the riverbanks or capybara grazing in the grass. After exploring by land, hop in a canoe to paddle down the river. The slow rhythm of the canoe allows for a deeper connection with the lush environment (a motor would disrupt the tranquility). Look out for colorful birds flitting between the reeds or more caimans gliding stealthily through the water, as an estimated 10 million are in the region.
End the day with a horseback ride, the region's typical transportation, to see the sunset. Watch as the sun begins its descent, casting a warm glow over the vast wetlands while your horse traverses the open plains and meandering waterways. When darkness falls, venture into the forest with your guide to look for the nocturnal animals just awakening. Listen to the chirps of insects and the rustling of unseen creatures as you look out for the glowing eyes of owls or anteaters. After an action-packed day, return to the fazenda to rest.
Day 9: Jaguar Safari in Pantanal
After a cup of coffee to start the day, transfer 62 miles (100 km) to Porto Jofre. On the way, stop to enjoy a picnic breakfast and look out for alligators and capybaras. When you arrive in Porto Jofre, jump in a boat to cruise along four rivers, including the Rio Cuiabá, to find the water-loving jaguar grazing on vegetation along the shoreline and prowling for prey like fish, turtles, or caimans in the water. North Pantanal is one of the best places in the world to see this elusive creature, as the region has the highest density of jaguars in the Americas.
Stop at a riverbank beach for a snack and admire the lush flora of the riparian forest. The towering centennial trees are home to playful monkeys and exotic birds, so keep an eye out. Hop back in the boat and remember to look in the water, as river otters, anacondas, and caimans may also surface. When the show's star finally appears, get your camera out to snap a photo of the graceful feline that can hold its breath underwater for up to 20 minutes. After a day of wildlife spotting, return to Porto Jofre, then back to your fazenda for dinner.
Day 10: Wildlife Tours in North Pantanal
Spend another day participating in various activities of your choosing. Discover more of the Pantanal, whether it's a bird-watching excursion at dawn, a Jeep photo safari on the Transpantaneira, observing caimans, canoeing along the river, or riding horses. Later in the day, you can't miss another epic sunset of the Pantanal. Once night has fallen, you'll again head out with a local guide to observe nocturnal animals as they search for food, perhaps spotting elusive creatures such as the ocelot.Day 11: Fly to Porto de Galinhas
After one last breakfast at your fazenda, you'll make the three-hour transfer back to Cuiabá, where you'll catch a 1.5-hour flight to Brasilia, then another 2.5-hour flight to the beautiful Porto de Galinhas. Considered one of Brazil's three most beautiful beaches, Porto de Galinhas combines an attractive landscape of palm trees and blue sea with a year-round party vibe. Once you arrive, check into your charming hotel, then head out to experience the nightlife or stay in and rest for tomorrow's adventures.Day 12: Explore Porto de Galinhas
Today, you'll have a free day to explore Porto de Galinhas. Take a jaganda, a traditional flat-bottomed boat, along the mangroves on the Maracaípe River to spot seahorses in their natural habitat, or ride a dune buggy on the 9 miles (16 km) of beaches, including Muro Alot, Cupe, and Maracaípe. Visit the beaches of Ponta Serrambi for snorkeling or diving, and go beach hopping to find tide pools. As evening draws near, head to one of the beach bars and grab a refreshing drink, then dine at a waterfront restaurant for delicious freshly caught seafood.
Day 13: Barra Grande Beach & Maragogi Boat Tour
Get ready for another paradisiac journey this morning as you meet your driver in the hotel lobby for the 1.5-hour drive to Maragogi. Observe swaying palm trees and the tropical landscape before stopping at the beautiful Barra Grande Beach. Enjoy breakfast at a local beachside restaurant, then board a motorboat and head to the natural pools of the Coral Coast protected area just 2.5 miles (4 km) away to enjoy swimming and snorkeling with tropical fish in warm, clear water. Follow up with a walk along the Moses Trail, a long sandbar that emerges from the sea at low tide.
From here, you'll return to Maragogi, where you'll have plenty of time to laze on the beach or visit Antunes Beach, which is a close walk and less crowded. Finally, meet your driver at the agreed-upon time to return to Porto de Galinhas. Savor your last evening with cocktails as you watch the sunset.
Day 14: Catamaran to Praia dos Carneiros, Fly to Rio de Janeiro, Depart
Rise early today for an excursion to Praia dos Carneiros, known for its shallow and crystalline waters, perfect for snorkeling. You'll first be picked up at your hotel for the one-hour drive to Carneiros. When you arrive, board a catamaran to explore the coast. Relax as you sail past mangroves and exotic marine life before witnessing San Benito Chapel. Nearby, the well-known Bora Restaurant and Hotel is the perfect stop for a delicious lunch.
After your catamaran sailing adventure, a driver will transfer you to the Recife airport, where you'll catch your flight back to Rio de Janeiro and continue your journey home. Adeus! (Farewell!)
