The Ultimate Tanzania Safari: Arusha, Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park & Ngorongoro - 8 Days

Day 1: Arrive in Arusha, Visit the Cultural Heritage Centre

Welcome to Tanzania! Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, meet your driver for a one-hour transfer to your hotel in Arusha, nestled at the base of Mount Meru and surrounded by several national parks, making it the perfect starting point for safaris. Stay in and relax by the pool, or venture out to explore the city at your own pace. Opt for a visit to the Cultural Heritage Centre to learn more about Tanzanian culture and artistry. As you wander through the galleries, you'll discover exhibits that tell the stories of various tribes and their customs.

The center also features a bustling marketplace where local artisans sell their handicrafts. Explore the stalls and pick up souvenirs, then sit down at the on-site restaurant and savor traditional dishes, such as nyama choma (grilled meat), served with sides like ugali (thick porridge made from white maize meal) or kachumbari (a fresh tomato and onion salad). If you have a sweet tooth, grab a tropical fruit salad or mandazi (sweet, fried pastry) before returning to your hotel.

Day 2: Half-Day City Tour, Visit Mount Meru Waterfall & Lake Duluti

Join your guide on a half-day tour of Arusha this morning, starting at the National Natural History Museum, where you'll learn about the country's rich natural heritage. Then, head to the Uhuru Monument erected in 1961 CE as a tribute to the Tanzanian Uhuru Freedom Movement. Your next stop is the Tanzanite Experience Museum, home to an extensive collection of this blue-violet gemstone that was discovered in the 1960s in the Mererani Hills near Arusha and is exclusively mined in Tanzania.

Explore the museum's exhibits to learn about the unique geological conditions required for Tanzanite formation and the creation of its vibrant blue-violet hues. See the craftsmanship of the various cuts and discover how they bring out the gemstone's brilliance. Then, experience a simulated Tanzanite mine that replicates the conditions of the Mererani mines before stopping by the museum shop to purchase a piece of certified Tanzanite jewelry. Finally, end the tour at the Central Market and Maasai Market to shop for souvenirs among the handmade goods.

In the afternoon, you'll set off on a hike to Mount Meru Waterfall, just 45 minutes outside the city. Follow a short, steep path to reach the cascade within the lush landscapes of Arusha National Park. Go for a refreshing dip in the natural pool below, then dry off and enjoy a picnic lunch before continuing to Lake Duluti. Choose from a range of activities to explore the tranquil lake, such as canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and bird-watching. As there are over 140 different species of birds, including African fish eagles and kingfishers, you're sure to see a few species no matter which activity you choose. 

Day 3: Transfer to Tarangire National Park, Game Drive

Say goodbye to Arusha this morning as you set off on a two-hour transfer to Tarangire National Park, renowned for its vast landscapes dotted with baobab trees and a vibrant array of wildlife. When you arrive, check in at your safari lodge on the edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Once settled in, you'll head out on a game drive through the national park. Follow the banks of the baobab and acacia-lined Tarangire River, a vital and permanent water source where plenty of wildlife gathers to drink. Here, you may spot large herds of elephants, African buffalo, giraffes, and zebras.

Be sure to look in the water, as you'll often find hippos lounging about to keep cool. In addition to these well-known creatures, there are plenty of endangered animals exclusive to the national park, such as the greater kudu, the fringe-eared oryx, and the ashy starling. Along the way, stop for a picnic lunch overlooking the river, but keep an eye on your food, as the local monkey population may try to snatch it. Then, return to the lodge in time for a delicious dinner made with produce from the on-site farm. 

Day 4: Transfer to Serengeti National Park, Evening Game Drive

After breakfast at the lodge, hit the road again on a 3-4-hour transfer to Serengeti National Park, famous for its vast savannas, rolling hills, and diverse ecosystems. On the way, you'll stop at the Olduvai Gorge, an archaeological site where some of the earliest hominid fossils (dating back 1.9 million years) were discovered. Visit the Olduvai Gorge Museum to see replicas of fossilized remains and tools used by early humans. Enjoy a packed lunch, then jump back in the car and complete the drive to your lodge, ideally positioned in the center of the Serengeti. 

Settle into your luxurious canvas tent and get ready for an evening game drive through Central Serengeti. As the sun sets and temperatures cool, you'll have a better chance of spotting nocturnal creatures and predators beginning their nightly hunt. Look out for lions and leopards prowling the grasslands while you listen for the distinctive laugh of hyenas. You may also see smaller creatures like genets, bushbabies, porcupines, and civets. Though birds can be harder to spot, some nocturnal species exist in the park, like the African nightjar and spotted-eagle owl.

Days 5-6: Watch the Great Migration in Serengeti National Park

Spend the next two days watching the Great Migration in the Serengeti, an awe-inspiring spectacle that occurs every year. See millions of wildebeest, accompanied by thousands of zebras and other herbivores like gazelles and impala, embark on a perilous journey in search of fresh grazing lands and water. You may witness the dramatic river crossings, where wildebeests and their companions bravely plunge into the treacherous waters of the Grumeti or Mara Rivers, facing lurking crocodiles and predators waiting on the banks.

Alongside the main migration, you'll observe a variety of wildlife, including graceful giraffes, majestic elephants, and stealthy lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, all drawn to the rich ecosystem that thrives during this time. The cacophony of sounds—thundering hooves, the calls of birds, and the distant roars of lions—enhances the experience. Stay out until sunset to watch the sky transform into a canvas of deep oranges and rich reds, casting a warm glow over the savanna. Then, return to the lodge in time for dinner each night to savor local favorites like wild game meat paired with fresh produce. 

Day 7: Transfer to Ngorongoro Crater, Half-Day Game Drive

Leave the Serengeti behind this morning as you set off on a 1.5-hour transfer to the Ngorongoro Crater for a half-day game drive. This remarkable ecosystem spans over 100 square miles (260 sq km) and is home to the Big Five: lions, elephants, leopards, rhinoceros, and buffalo. Descend into the crater and traverse the open grasslands, acacia forests, and shimmering lakes. The sheer abundance of wildlife in the compact area makes every vehicle turn a potential highlight. In addition to the Big Five, you may also see more wildebeest, zebras, hyenas, and even cheetahs if you're lucky. 

Head toward Lake Magadi, a shallow alkaline lake renowned for its turquoise waters and the mesmerizing sight of thousands of flamingoes that flock to its shores. The vast expanse of shimmering water contrasts beautifully with the surrounding arid land, creating a picturesque setting perfect for wildlife photography. After snapping a few pictures, continue to a nearby hippo pond to enjoy a picnic lunch and watch hippos wallow in the water or bask in the sun. When ready, bid farewell to the crater and transfer to your safari lodge at the edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Day 8: Transfer to Arusha, Depart

Now that you've seen some of Tanzania's most beautiful natural landscapes and wildlife, it's time to head home. Meet your driver for the four-hour transfer back to Arusha, winding through lush green hills and fertile farmland. Keep an eye out for traditional Maasai villages for a glimpse into their vibrant culture. If you want to pick up some souvenirs, ask your driver to stop along the way or in Arusha before ending at the airport for your flight home. Safe travels!
