What you'll do

Granada is a beautiful city by day, but there's just something about how it comes alive in the evenings when the sun begins to set, lights flicker on, and locals embrace the slow yet vibrant social scene. One of the city's most historic and picturesque neighborhoods is the Albacín, a former Moorish district filled with viewpoints, quiet lanes, hidden gardens, historic sites, and lively streets.

You'll start by meeting your guide at Plaza del Salvador in front of the church, Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestro Salvador. This location places you right in the middle of the Albaicín, near the top of this hilly district, so you can slowly make your way down the twisting streets for a relaxed walk. This neighborhood, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, tells the story of Al-Andalus, the great Muslim kingdom. Granada was once its capital city in the 13th century, and the Albacín is the perfect example of preserved Moorish architecture.

As you stroll, your guide will lead you from one incredible viewpoint to another, stopping at five in total. Enjoy the views over the Arab walls that once protected the city and catch a glimpse of the Darro River, all enhanced by the evening light. You can also admire vistas of the majestic Alhambra palaces and the Sierra Nevada mountains (often snowcapped). As you walk, stop at a few historical sites, like churches built atop mosques, traditional carmenes (houses) with fragrant gardens, plazas with lingering locals, and streets lined with cafés and tea shops. You'll also dip into Sacromonte, the Albacín's neighboring district known as the land of caves and famous for its bohemian past.

At the end of your walk, you'll stop at a beloved local tavern to enjoy a drink and tapas, one per person. As you bite and sip, enjoy chatting with your local guide and continue learning about the city's unique history.

Eduardo met us at the hotel. I went alone as at the end of the holiday, one of us had knees that were too sore to want to do the hilly Albaicin area plus it had rained and the cobblestoned streets were a bit slippery. The tour got moved a bit earlier given the clocks went back while we were there (appreciated as the views are better in daylight). This ended up being booked towards the end of a few days we spent in Granada, so we had seen some of the stuff routinely on the tour. The great thing with private guides is they are flexible so Eduardo walking me up and down to various other lookouts I had not seen, and through the medieval streets, and one large beautiful garden in a university owned building. Lots of conversation which put it all into various contexts, and, again, was geared towards my personal interests.

Tips for future travelers

It would have been hard to see the stuff we saw in a group.

Our guide, Lara was great. She provided a fascinating overview of the history and important sights of this historic region. She also timed it perfectly, in the evening when it was cooler and we could enjoy the sunsets from the hilltops. Read more
