Suárez Canyon Bike Tour

Overview

The village of Barichara, located in Colombia's northern-central department of Santander, might just be the most well-preserved colonial town in the entire country. Moreover, this gem is surrounded by beautiful Andes mountains abounding with waterfalls, rivers, and canyons perfect for exploring. On a bicycle tour with a local guide is the best way to do just that.

This is a medium-difficulty cycling tour that covers a 15-mile (25-km) route. It begins a couple of kilometers outside Barichara, in the area near the tiny town of Cabrera, which is 1800 meters (5,905 feet) above sea level. The trail descends downhill, amid rich green mountain scenery, to the bottom of the Suárez Canyon. Of course there will be plenty of opportunities along the way to stop and take photos of the panoramic landscapes. Upon reaching the base of the canyon it's also an option to take a celebratory dip in the Río Suárez. The total duration of this cycling tour is 4-5 hours, which means folks will be back in Barichara to enjoy a well-deserved lunch in town after the long ride.
