What you'll do

Explore Greece's vegetarian cuisine, which relies heavily on olive oil, herbs, vegetables, and legumes, on this city walk. Begin by meeting your guide in Monastiraki Square under the shining columns of the Acropolis, then grab a Greek coffee and a koulouri, a ring-shaped sesame-covered pastry (like a bagel). Next, continue your walk through Monastiraki, which has been inhabited for 6,000 years and is home to historic sites like Hadrian's Library and the Roman Agora.

You'll walk to the adjacent area of Plaka, the oldest neighborhood in Athens, built under the northeast slope of the Acropolis. This pedestrian-only quarter is filled with labyrinthine cobblestoned streets, neoclassical buildings, ancient churches, and of course, delicious food. Your guide will take you to different spots to try classic vegetarian dishes like dolmades and fava dip.

Next, swing by a store selling mastic products made from mastika, an earthy sap cultivated from trees on the island of Chios, whose different uses and healing properties have made it a favorite of the Greek diet since ancient times. You'll also visit the oldest pie shop in Athens, where you can try handmade phyllo pies filled with fresh ingredients like spinach, leeks, or cheese. Finally, end the excursion with a sweet treat as you sample an organic rolled ice cream.
