Makris Beach Hotel, Santorini

4.8 (16 reviews) · Comfort
Beachside hotel with modern rooms, sea-view balconies, Jacuzzi options, and a popular restaurant

Overview

Makris Beach Hotel is a Cycladic-style, rustic property steps away from the black sands of Kamari Beach. Located on the quieter eastern side of Santorini (the non-caldera side), guests can access nearby dining and shops or check out Ancient Thera and the caldera, both within a 10-minute drive. Rooms at Makris are done up in a palette of pleasing earthy tones, each opening onto a private balcony or patio, while some have the extra perk of a Jacuzzi. Guests can take in some sea and sun at the beach and stretch out on the sunbeds. The all-day bar and restaurant serves up Greek dishes and offers a 10% discount to hotel guests.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • Makris Beach Hotel is a quick minute walk up the street from Kamari Beach, famous for its distinctive black pebbles.
  • Guests can enjoy sea views from select rooms and the beachfront restaurant.
  • Rooms feature private furnished balconies or patios, some outfitted with a Jacuzzi (Deluxe Rooms).
  • Dine on tasty Greek food at Prince, the hotel's open-air, beachfront restaurant (though shared with the public), which offers a breakfast buffet, lunch, dinner, and drinks.
  • At Makris Beach Hotel, guests will be in the thick of the action, with restaurants, bars, shops, and beach access within a 1-5-minute walk.
Cons
  • Some rooms may experience noise from the courtyard and restaurant, open from 9 am to 4 am when the bar shutters, but this lively atmosphere may be just right for night owls.
  • Breakfast is available starting at 8 am; this might be later than some travelers prefer.
  • As Prince Restaurant is open to the public, guests will have to make dinner reservations to secure a table.

Authenticity

Makris Beach Hotel does a decent job of channeling Santorini's Cycladic style with curved lines, whitewashed walls, exposed stone, Roman clay-treated accent walls, and rustic natural elements, like driftwood bedposts. The hotel embraces the local culture through its design and culinary offerings at Prince Restaurant, which serves authentic Greek fare, like stewed lamb kleftiko (alongside international cuisine) and local wines.

Location

Located just steps from the volcanic black pebbles and sand of Kamari, Makris Beach Hotel is in a buzzy area frequented by travelers (you'll find souvenir shops next door). Several beachfront bars and restaurants are within a five-minute walk, as is a grocery and clothing store. The hotel is conveniently positioned for exploring Santorini, with Fira a 15-minute drive. Alternatively, there's a bus guests can catch, just a 7-minute walk away, that goes to Fira with a connecting option to Oia. Closer attractions include Ancient Thera and its historic ruins (Temple of Apollo Karneios); though it's best accessed by car, it's a winding 10-15-minute drive. Meanwhile, it's a 20-minute drive to the Athinios Ferry Port and a 10-minute drive to Santorini Airport.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The rooms at Makris Beach Hotel are charmingly rustic with Cycladic influences (whitewashed exteriors with rounded corners), featuring exposed stone accent walls, straw light fixtures, wrought iron furniture, and driftwood bedposts, to name a few style choices. There are a handful of room types. Cozy Double Rooms have bathrooms that could use an update, though they're equipped with a kitchenette and can accommodate 2-3 people. All other Deluxe Rooms with a view and Suites fit 2-5 guests. And the best part, all rooms come with private furnished balconies or patios, and two room types offer Jacuzzis that look out to the sea.

Amenities

What Makris Beach Hotel lacks in amenities, it makes up for in beach access and sun loungers. Then there are the private Jacuzzis, though guests must upgrade to a Deluxe One or Two-bedroom unit to enjoy them. That said, the property is home to adjoining Prince Restaurant, an open-air dining venue with beachfront and Mésa Vounó mountain views (10% discount for hotel guests). Prince's menu features Greek and international dishes and is open from 9 am to 4 am (when the bar closes); it's here that the breakfast buffet is available. Free public parking is can be accessed near the property.

Authenticity & Character
We stayed in a room that had a lot of character. The decor was very unique.
Location
The hotel is a short walk to the beachside restaurants in Kamari. If you eat at any of the restaurants, you can use their beach chairs and umbrellas for as long as you like. How nice! There are buses in Makris that go to Fira, and from Fira there are buses to Oia. We enjoyed using the buses to get around in our free time. It was only 1.6 euros per ride and it was a nice way to see the island.
Staff
Maria was wonderful. She made us laugh a lot!
Cleanliness & Comfort
The room was quite comfortable, but we had to be careful not to get the bathroom floor all wet when taking a shower due to its unique design (no shower curtains). Minor detail. Overall the room was great.

Nice new building. Well decorated and clean. Private hot tub on balcony with ocean view. Free breakfast was mediocre but the attached restaurant and bar was very nice with a range of offerings.
