Mercure Omaha Beach, Bayeux
A charming hotel on a golf course with an outdoor pool, Normandy cuisine, and eco-friendly practices
Overview
The Mercure Omaha Beach Hotel is set on a lush 36-hole golf course and is the place to escape for golf lovers. Beyond golfing, the hotel has everything needed for relaxation, as there are several amenities like an outdoor terrace, swimming pool, and whirlpool bath. Travelers interested in history will find the hotel's location convenient, being close to the Medieval town of Bayeux, famous for the Bayeux Tapestry, and the D-Day Region with the Normandy American Cemetery, Pointe du Hoc, and the artificial port of Arromanches-les-Bains all being nearby. The hotel has 70 comfortable rooms with cozy interiors, flat-screen TVs, deep-soaking bathtubs, and coffee/tea makers. There's an on-site restaurant, A l'Epicerie, serving Normandy cuisine. Mercure Omaha Beach Hotel also commits to sustainable measures and has obtained the Green Key certification.
Kimkim's Take
- The hotel's is close to most of Normandy's historic attractions, like the D-Day sites.
- Travelers praise the hotel staff for their attentive service.
- There's a swimming pool and hot tub.
- The on-site restaurant serves local Normandy dishes.
- The property has terraces and gardens.
- Golf lovers will love the proximity to the golf course.
- Some rooms on the second floor require stair access, so they're unsuitable for some travelers.
- Past travelers reported issues with the buffet breakfast being empty later in the morning.
- Some parts of the hotel require renovation.
Authenticity
The hotel was built in 1989 and renovated in 2010; parts were renovated in 2023, and more rooms are scheduled for further renovation soon. Although the building isn't historic, its setting overlooking dramatic Normandy cliffs and coastline adds to the local atmosphere. The hotel features a warm, cozy decor style with a mix of leather, wood paneling, and tapestries, and the recent renovation restored the original bay windows and glass roof. The on-site restaurant, A l'Epicerie, serves local Normandy dishes in a classic bistro setting.Location
Mercure Omaha Beach Hotel is just outside the coastal town of Port-en-Bressin in Normandy, only a scenic 15 to 20-minute walk away. The town offers a choice of shops, restaurants, bars, and cafés. The hotel is also a 15 drive to the Medieval town of Bayeux and a 10-minute to one-hour drive to the various D-Day historic sites in Normandy, such as the Normandy American Cemetery, Pointe du Hoc, and the artificial port of Arromanches-les-Bains close to Port-en-Bressin. Both the hotel and the golf course overlook the sea.Rooms & Bathrooms
The rooms range in size from 172 sq ft (16 sq m) to 312 sq ft (29 sq m) with six types of room to choose from: the Classic Twin or Double, Superior Twin or Double with a sofa bed, Duplex Superior Room with a double and two twins, and the Privilege Room with a double bed and a sofa bed. The decor is warm and cozy, with brown furniture and burgundy fabrics. The rooms have amenities like air-conditioning, an LCD TV with satellite channels, and toiletries, and some rooms have a Nespresso machine. The bathrooms are in an "Asian-Zen" style and have a bathroom, sink, shower or bath, and hairdryer. Some higher categories come with a bathrobe and slippers. Accessible rooms are available.Amenities
The hotel has an outdoor pool open from Easter until November, with a shallow and deeper end for swimming. There's a Jacuzzi that's heated all year round as well. The area surrounding the pool has some trees. There are two bars on the property: the lounge bar Le Club House, which has cozy leather armchairs and views of the golf course and the sea, and Le Fairway, a bar with a French billiards table that backs onto the terraces and gardens. Hotel guests can access this bar from the swimming pool. There's also an on-site restaurant, A l'Epicerie, serving local Norman dishes, and there's also the option to start the day with a buffet breakfast from 6:30 am. One of the big pulls of the hotel is its proximity to a 36-hole golf course. There's also a small wellness area with a sauna, steam room, and gym.Family-Friendliness
The hotel is a good choice for families, as duplex rooms suit families. Children of any age are welcome, and those under 12 stay for free. There's a children's menu at breakfast. There's an elevator to most of the hotel, although some past hotel guests said the second floor required stair access. The hotel should be accessible to those with strollers.Like what you see?
