Cons

• Like many cave and cliffside hotels in Oia, there are a number of steps to navigate, so this isn't appropriate for those with mobility issues.  

Authenticity

The story of the Perivolas goes back to the 1950s. Sea captain Manos Psychas decided to settle on Santorini, the island of his family. He turned a number of 300-year-old cave dwellings into a peaceful retreat. In the 1980s, the Psychas family transformed this home into Santorini's original cave hotel and the family continues to run Perivolas today. All the cave rooms have been constructed by hand using traditional materials and methods to maintain the customs and legacies of the family and the fishermen who once lived here. 

Location

Perched outside the center of Oia, near the start of the village, the Perivolas has the benefit of being close enough to the hubbub without getting overwhelmed by it. Venture into Oia, which is 15 minutes away on foot, or take in the sunset with a bit more peace and quiet from the hotel itself. Thera is 20 minutes away by car, while the Red Beach and archaeological site of Akrotiri are 30.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The 20 suites of the Perivolas all follow the traditional Santorini cave home style but do so with a modern twist. Bold splashes of color bounce off of curved whitewashed walls. Most rooms comfortably sleep two, and are ideal for couples, but groups or families with kids over 16 can book larger two-bedroom options. The villa is open to families with younger kids as well. If you're looking for extra luxury, higher-tier rooms have amenities like terraces, saunas, and private plunge pools.
