Simone Scalas
I'm the Tour leader of Mediterras. After a BA degree, I did a masters in Tourism. Then I spent six months in South Africa to improve my English, starting as a volunteer in a shark cage diving company. Back in Sardinia, I started working in hospitality at the luxury Forte Village resort. Then, with my friend and business partner Marcello, we started a tourism consulting company.
We've been working for the Sardinian tourism board, promoting the island as a destination for active tourism. In the meantime, I started leading active tours for several international tour operators, mostly on the high-end market. After 15 years of tour leading all over Europe, we involved Gian Mario and started Mediterras, focusing on customized tours in the Mediterranean.
What places and activities do you specialize in?
"Sardinia, Corsica, and Tuscany are our main destinations. Yet being at the center of the Med we operate in all Mediterranean destinations. We do active travel in general, focusing on cycling, hiking, food&wine, and cultural tours. "
How did you get involved in travel?
"Since I was a child I dreamed of adventure, being attracted by real adventure like exploring the immense Mediterranean forest close to home, and by the representation of adventure itself, since I've been always attracted by maps and atlas. The final revelation was leading my first cycling tour back in the days. I knew it was my life. Travelling is sharing, it can be a tough climb or a Michelin star dinner, and when people share an experience we make the world a better place."
Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.
"I was leading a family reunion tour, for the 50 years wedding anniversary of the parents, Lisa and Jeff. Since Jeff lost his wedding ring, Lisa bought one from a local craftsman. So she asked me to organize something to offer the new wedding ring to Jeff. So, what's better than a new wedding for the new wedding ring? I took the whole group on the scenic lookout terrace in the old Cagliari, right at sunset. Then with the help of the bartender and the waitress acting as best man and maid of honor, using a high bar table as an altar and my co-guide that sang a serenade, I officiate a new "wedding". Mamma mia, we had lots of public and everybody was crying, including the celebrant."
