Best of Taroudant

In the heart of the Souss Valley, Taroudant is sometimes described as the most beautiful town in southern Morocco. The city evokes a bygone era with its tall crenelated walls, complete with bastions and old gates that are still in use. Taroudant is a rewarding city to explore, with walks around town taking in vibrant souks, hidden gardens, and surprising views of the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas Mountains off in the distance. Despite being somewhat off the beaten path of typical Moroccan travel itineraries, Taroudant and the surrounding countryside have some excellent lodging options, including art-filled boutique hotels set in traditional riads.    

Take in memorable views of Taroudant on a walk or bike ride along the ramparts surrounding the city. You can stop for a closer look at Bâb El Kasbah, Taroudant’s oldest and most impressive gate, with a panoramic overlook from high above. Northeast of town, you can visit the landscapes surrounding Jebel Siroua, an ancient volcano and the highest point of the Anti-Atlas at 10,840 ft (3304 m). Tiout, located southeast of Taroudant, makes another rewarding day trip. Nicknamed “the garden of delights,” the oasis-like settlement has orange trees, date groves and pomegranates set at the foot of a 16th-century kasbah.
