Best of Arequipa

Set with dazzling whitewashed buildings hewn from a volcanic stone called sillar, Arequipa is known as “the white city,” and it’s easy to see why local pride runs so deep here. Peru’s second-largest city has a treasure trove of cultural attractions, plus superb dining and nightlife. You can discover some of its secrets on a guided walking tour through the colonial center, and wander through the maze-like corridors of the enchanting 16th-century Santa Catalina Convent. There are also fine places to take in the view over the city to the conical peak of El Misti and beyond. The best place to be at sunset is the Yanahuara Viewpoint, perched at an elevation of 7,687 feet (2,343 m). 

Some of Peru’s most dramatic landscapes surround Arequipa, making it a launchpad for some incredible attractions. Previous kimkim travelers have taken the multi-day trek to the spectacular Cotahuasi Canyon, which is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. Another way to get off the beaten path is to visit the dramatic Añahuasco Quarry and see stonemasons in action. The fairytale-like Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve is home to snow-white salt flats, hot springs and a surprising assortment of wildlife — including llamas, vicuña, guanaco and several species of flamingo.
