Best of Puno

Overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Titicaca, Puno makes an ideal base for exploring the many wonders of the world’s largest high-altitude lake. Formed some 60 million years ago, the lake plays a central role in Andean mythology, and it is considered the birthplace of the Inca civilization. Visits to the lake's islands connect travelers with age-old ways of life. On the floating islands of Uros, the locals use reeds to make their homes, their boats and handicrafts. On Isla Taquile, Quechua-speaking islanders maintain centuries-old weaving traditions and the hills have terraces that pre-date the Incas. A short drive west of Puno, the funerary towers of Sillustani look like something from another world. 

The lake is a great place for adventure while also learning about Andean culture. Previous kimkim travelers have enjoyed kayaking trips to various Titicaca islands, stopping for shoreside relaxing and a bracing swim (for the hearty few). Overnighting in local island communities provides an even more immersive Titicaca experience. Wherever you go, you’ll see spectacular scenery: arid landscapes, topaz blue waters and the chiseled peaks of the Andes soaring overhead.
