Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: From Hvolsvöllur to Þórsmörk in a Super Jeep
Your trip starts in the town of Hvolsvöllur, about an hour and a half southeast of Reykjavik. From there, hop into a Super Jeep and drive off road into Þórsmörk (Thorsmork), crossing unbridged glacial outflows towards Eyjafjallajokull, the volcano that famously erupted in 2010. Reach the outlet glacier of Gígjökull and see how the eruption dramatically altered the surrounding landscape. Spend the night camping in your choice of tent or mountain hut, and enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of remote Þórsmörk.
Day 2: Hike and Explore Þórsmörk
After breakfast, continue exploring the Þórsmörk Valley. Drive around the area and explore the stunning water-cut canyons on the lower slopes of Eyjafjallajokull.
Leaving Þórsmörk behind, get up close to the Seljalandsfoss waterfall and walk behind its veil. Then travel out to the Atlantic coast and roam its magnificent black sand beaches, formed as a result of volcanic activity. If there's time and you're in the mood for more adventure, go ice walking on the Sólheimajökull glacier or snowmobiling on the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap (depending on the season and your interests).
