Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Oslo, Transfer to Sonsterud, Spa Day

For your first night in Norway, sleep amid the treetops (photo courtesy of PAN Treetop Cabins)

Welcome to Norway! To say this Nordic nation is beautiful would be an understatement. It's home to no fewer than eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites that are hallmarks of Norway's rich patrimony and natural beauty. You'll see many such highlights over the next two weeks, from the countryside to the coast and the fjords to the mountains. Even better—you'll be staying in luxury the entire time. It begins with your arrival in the capital of Oslo, which is a premium travel destination in its own right. But this adventure mostly celebrates Norway's rural highlights, and that's where you're off to.

At the airport, pick up your rental car and hit the road north to Sonsterud. Located near the border with Sweden, this village is surrounded by thick forests and glassy lakes. The unspoiled wilderness is great for nature hikes, fishing, or relaxing amid the countryside splendor. Speaking of which, your accommodation makes full use of the area's woodlands. You'll be staying at the PAN Treetop Cabins, a rustic (yet fully equipped) lodge with comfy cabins amid the treetops. Each comes with modern conveniences like double beds and hot water—plus floor-to-ceiling windows to enjoy the elevated views.

After checking in, you can take the edge off the day's travel with a late afternoon appointment at Spa Finnskogen. Here, you'll enjoy a tranquil and rejuvenating interlude overseen by wellness therapists, featuring various treatments utilizing organic and natural products.

Day 2: Drive to Nes, Honey Farm Tour

Enjoy country comfort and hospitality in Nes (photo courtesy of Herregården Hotel)

Rise and shine! After breakfast in your treehouse, you'll hit the country lanes again on a 1.5-hour drive southwest to Nes. There, you'll hop over to adjacent Helgøya. This 7-square-mile (18 sq km) island sits on a large lake covered in farmland and is known for its whitewashed 19th-century church. However, your destination is a local honey farm, where an expert guide will lead you on a walk around the meadows amid the low hum of honeybees as they collect nectary from various blossoms. Of course, the tour concludes with a tasting of locally produced honey.

Afterward, continue just outside of Nes to your accommodation, Herregården Hoel. This 5-star hotel is right out of a fairy tale, set in an 18th-century manor home featuring spacious rooms with antique bed frames, hardwood floors, French tubs, and silver candelabras perched on vintage bureaus. Many of the rooms and suites offer expansive views of the verdant countryside, and there's an on-site restaurant where you can enjoy farm-to-table dining with an emphasis on sustainability—many of the ingredients are sourced right from the hotel's own garden.

Day 3: Drive to Storefoss, Horseback Riding in Valdres

Relax by a crackling fire in your cozy luxury hotel (photo courtesy of Herangtunet)

Leave Nes this morning on a 2.5-hour drive northwest to Storefoss. Situated at the end of the Heggefjord, this charming little town is the quintessential country village. It's surrounded by unspoiled forests, rivers, and waterfalls, as well as historical sites and cultural landmarks.

The drive there's long, but it's a scenic ride. Along the way, you'll stop for a break in Valdres, a picturesque mountain region offering a range of fun outdoor activities. At a local farm here, you'll visit the stables and meet the horse that will be your partner on today's equestrian experience. Then, saddle up and head out on private mountain trails, spending an hour or two enjoying rural Norway's natural splendor. After the ride, you'll return to the stable and say goodbye to your host/guide.

From Valdres, it's another 30 minutes to Storefoss and your accommodation, Herangtunet. This family-run boutique hotel perfectly balances intimacy and luxury. It features just four spacious suites and theme rooms outfitted with plush double beds, full baths, antique furniture, and wood stoves—plus mod-cons like flat-screen TVs. Upon arrival, you can sit down for a meal at the rustic restaurant, which takes you on a culinary journey through Norway, featuring locally sourced fish and meat grilled to perfection on the outdoor barbecue. Afterward, retire to your suite for a nightcap in front of a crackling fire.

Day 4: Drive to Aurland, Guided Waterfall Hike

Colorful, traditional villages dot the shores of the Aurlandsfjord

This morning, you're off to Norway's UNESCO-listed western fjords region, which extends up the long coastline all the way to the Arctic. Your destination is the Aurlandsfjord, an offshoot of the Sognefjord—Norway's longest and deepest fjord. Here, at the fjord's eponymous main town, is your lodging: 29|2 Aurland.

Nestled in the green meadows of the Aurlandsdalen Valley, this historic country property began life as a fishing lodge for a British lord. Today, it's a family-run boutique hotel with a friendly staff that includes a private chef and artist-in-residence. The owners will happily arrange outdoor activities during your stay, and each night, a gourmet dinner of organic ingredients is served in the smokehouse.

After checking in, you'll head out and explore the gorgeous fjordlands on a private nature hike. This half-day excursion begins when you embark on a hike right from town to Turlidfossen, a nearby waterfall. As you explore the nature trails, your local expert guide will reveal fascinating insights into the Norse myths and folklore that define the region. A major highlight is when you arrive at a secluded spot at the top of a hill, where you'll break for a gourmet picnic lunch overlooking the Aurlandsfjord. After hiking back to the hotel, you'll have the rest of the day to explore on your own.

Day 5: Fly Fishing & Outdoor Hot Tub Experience

It's a quick trip from your hotel to a secluded section of the Aurland River

More outdoor adventures await, as today you'll enjoy the time-honored tradition of fly fishing. It's a short drive to the Aurland River, ranked as one of the best trout-fishing rivers in all of Europe. Once here, you'll cast a line and see if you can hook some of these prized fish. Don't worry about the crowds, as you and your private guide will have an entire section of the river to yourselves. Know that fishing in this region is catch-and-release.

Later, you'll return to Aurland and enjoy a nice long soak in a Scandinavian bath. These traditional outdoor hot tubs are not only made of wood but also heated by a wood-burning stove. So kick back, relax, and let the hot tub work its magic. Complimenting the experience are the panoramic views of the fjord and surrounding wilderness.

Day 6: Drive to Bergen, Afternoon Sailing Cruise

The road trip continues as you hop behind the wheel this morning for the 2.5-hour ride west to the port city of Bergen. This charming port city is famous for its UNESCO-listed Bryggen Wharf, filled with colorful, historic buildings. There will be stops on the way to do some sightseeing, and one highlight is Vøringsfossen, one of the most visited waterfalls in Norway. It's also one of the tallest, plunging 587 feet (182 m) over a mountain plateau into a valley—don't forget your camera!

Later, you'll arrive in Bergen and your hotel. You'll be staying in the historic center at Bergen Børs. Located in the former stock exchange building across from the harbor, this 4-star hotel is one of the few luxury options in town, featuring modern rooms with high ceilings, arched windows, and herringbone floors. The impressive dining options include a "seafood cathedral" adorned with restored frescoes and a Michelin-starred Nordic restaurant that serves a seasonal menu.

After checking in, step aboard a private sailboat and cruise around the harbor as you enjoy prime views of Bergen's colorful waterfront. This two-hour tour will also take you out into the fjords, where you'll be treated to more incredible scenery, including the famous Seven Mountains that surround Bergen. As you go, your knowledgeable captain will share stories of Bergen's rich history, including its roots as a major hub in the Hanseatic League's trading empire from the 14th-16th century.

Day 7: Fly to the Lofoten Islands, Midnight Sun Hike

Welcome to the Lofotens, where during summer, the sun is out around the clock

Today, you're off to the Arctic Circle. After breakfast, you'll transfer to Bergen's airport, where you'll board a plane for the 2.5-hour flight to Svolvær. This postcard fishing village lies within the Lofoten Islands, an archipelago of 80 islands that's one of the most spectacular coastal destinations in all of Scandinavia. Just like Bergen and the Westfjords, these islands also enjoy UNESCO status.

Upon arrival, pick up another rental car and head to the nearby Svolvær Harbor and Anker Brygge. This 5-star hotel occupies a redesigned rorbu—a traditional red fisherman's hut. This hotel was originally a fish factory dating to 1880, and it has been renovated while maintaining its historic charm. Its location, in the center of Lofoten's capital, puts you within a seven-minute walk from the town square and other attractions. The comfy rooms feature panoramic views of the harbor, and amenities include a sauna bar and an on-site restaurant serving gourmet cuisine utilizing local, seasonal ingredients.

After checking in, lace up your hiking boots because you're off to discover a phenomenon that exists only in this part of the world. Along with a guide, you'll head over to the Lofoten's mountainous north side, where you'll hike up to a glassy plateau. Here, you'll enjoy views of the archipelago and sea illuminated by the midnight sun. During the summer months north of the Arctic Circle, the sun can be seen 24 hours a day. The views during this time, even in the evening hours, are great for photography.

Day 8: Morning Horseback Ride, Floating Sauna

Hit the trail around the Looftens' mountains and coast

There's no better way to experience the rugged beauty of the Lofotens than on horseback. This morning, you'll transfer to a farm that raises fine Icelandic horses. After meeting your guide and horse, you'll hop in the saddle for a 1.5-hour ride along the dramatic coastline. During the experience, you'll pass fishing villages and ancient landmarks dating back to the age of the Vikings. It's a bucket-list adventure suitable for beginners and experienced riders.

After the long ride, you'll return to town and give your body a rest with a relaxing soak in the Lofoten Sauna. One of Norway's famous "floating saunas," this one is located over the water in Svolvær Harbor. That means you'll get prime views of the fjord during your relaxing session.

Day 9: Drive to Andenes, Optional Activities

Even in the Arctic you can find white-sand beaches and turquoise waters

It's time for a road trip through the Arctic North! Grab breakfast, then depart Svolvær on a scenic four-hour drive to the northern tip of the Lofoten region. Your destination is Andenes, a village on the island of Andøya. Upon arrival, you'll make your way to Bleik Sea Cabins. Located just south of town, this beachfront property is the perfect spot for a cozy retreat. Each of its six cabins is well-equipped with WiFi, flat-screen TVs, and satellite channels. That's to say nothing of the private balcony overlooking the soft white sands of Bleik Beach on this remote stretch of idyllic coast.
