Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Kathmandu - Bazaar Walk and Kathmandu Durbar Square
As you fly into Kathmandu you'll have beautiful views over the city, the Himalaya, and of the terraced fields below. After going through customs, a representative will be waiting to greet you and guide you through the initial culture shock of Kathmandu’s narrow, winding streets and get you settled into your hotel.
Depending on your arrival time, later in the afternoon you can head out on a walking tour of an ancient bazaar. Explore the secret alleys and courtyards of old Kathmandu, dotted with Buddhist stupas and Hindu temples, and lined with stalls selling fruit and vegetables, spices, fabric, brass kitchenware, and more. Visit the nearby Kathmandu Durbar Square, an old center of royal and religious power. It's an eclectic mix of architectural styles, the centerpiece being the Hanuman Dhoka Palace.
In the evening, the tourist hub of Thamel is a good place to grab your first meal, with a variety of restaurants offering both Western and local Nepali dishes.
Day 2: Mountain Bike to the Trisuli River
Today we leave the Kathmandu Valley on mountain bikes. Cycle over the valley rim and into a great downhill ride along a ridgeline that leads us all the way down to the Trisuli River. Enjoy beautiful hill and valley views, and get your first glimpse of rural village life.
After arriving at the Trisuli River you'll be transferred to a riverside camp for your overnight stay, where you'll spend the night in comfortable style.
Chat with a local specialist who can help organize your trip.
Day 3: Canyoning and Rafting
This morning you have the choice to go canyoning or just relax at the camp. Either way, after lunch you'll go rafting, on a class III/IV river, for around three hours. The Trisuli River has some exciting but not overly challenging whitewater rapids, and several long, flat stretches. On those stretches, you can kick back and enjoy the ride through the scenic valley and past villages, terraced rice fields, and impressive gorges.
End your day's adventure with a short hike up from the river to the charming guest house of Brigand’s Bend at Kurintar. Here you can relax with a cool drink overlooking the river and the surrounding valleys.
Day 4: Cable car to Manakamana - Trek to Gorkha Gaun
This morning you'll need to pack your day pack, as you're going for your first Himalayan hike. First take a short hike to the highway, from where you'll drive 10 minutes to the cable car station at Kurintar for the amazing ride up to Manakamana.
This gondola cable car will lift you high above the Trisuli Valley, over 3300 feet (1000 m) into the mountains. It would take several hours to hike up to your destination, the temple at Manakamana, so getting there in 10 minutes is quite something. At the little pilgrimage town around the temple at the top it's interesting to see the Nepali and Indian pilgrims come to make offerings to the Hindu Goddess Bhagwati, an incarnation of Parvati.
After checking out the temple, hike up past the temple and along the ridgeline to the north of the temple. At the top of the hill you will have amazing mountain views of Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, and Langtang, among many others.
Hike along the ridge to Tinmane Bhanjyang, from where you'll descend for several hours through traditional villages to the little Ludi Khola (stream). The final bit of the walk to your hotel is uphill. Arrive by late afternoon, in time to enjoy a drink and the amazing sunset view of the mountains.
Day 5: Pokhara, Adventure Capital of Nepal
After breakfast, bid a fond farewell to Gorkha and drive a few hours westwards to Pokhara.
After checking in to your hotel the rest of today is free to explore this charming town, or to simply relax in the Lakeside area. Pokhara has some great cafes, good shopping, and lots of adventure activities, such as paddling on the lake, paragliding, mountain biking, sightseeing on classic Royal Enfield motorbikes, and some great walks. Take your pick.
Day 6: Fly to Kathmandu - Depart Nepal
After breakfast, transfer to Pokhara's domestic airport for your flight back across the mighty Himalaya to Kathmandu. Once in Kathmandu, you are free until it's time to head back to the airport in time for your flight home. Thanks for traveling with us and we hope to see you back in Nepal soon!
