Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Kathmandu, Transfer to Bardia National Park
Welcome to Nepal! Nestled between India and Tibet, this country was a major corridor on ancient trade routes thousands of years ago. Even today, it remains a melting pot of cultures. Over 100 languages are spoken here, and locals practice various religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity. Because the mighty Himalaya range runs through this country, it's also one of the most popular mountaineering destinations on Earth.
But there are other natural wonders besides Everest and the surrounding peaks. This quick adventure focuses on one such gem: Bardia National Park. Upon arrival in Nepal's capital of Kathmandu, you'll meet a driver for the two-hour drive northwest to Bardia. This protected area covers 374 square miles (968 sq km) of diverse ecosystems, including open woodlands, forests, grasslands, and wetlands. The real highlight here is the wildlife, with star residents including one-horned rhinos, Asian elephants, and Bengal tigers.
You should arrive at your wilderness camp in time for a late lunch. After eating, you'll meet up with a knowledgeable ranger/guide and receive an orientation about the remarkable flora and fauna within the park. Then, finish the day with a mini-picnic and sundowner cocktail or other beverage down by the banks of the Geruwa River.
Day 2: Tiger Safari & Tharu Village Trip
Lace up your hiking boots because early this morning, you'll meet a ranger/guide and set off on a walking safari in the park. This route will take you through the riverine ecosystem within the Khata Wildlife Corridor, a critical link connecting Bardia National Park to Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary in India. The primary goal is to spot the elusive Bengal tigers that inhabit the islands along the Geruwa River. It's also a great opportunity to spot other endemic animals, like Asian elephants, and exotic birds, like the black ibis, ruddy shelduck, greater cormorants, nightjars, fishing owls, and others.
After a couple of hours, you'll return to camp for a late breakfast. There will be time to relax after eating, followed by a journey to a local Tharu village. The Tharu are an agrarian ethnic group native to the Terai region of southern Nepal, where Bardi is located. They're known for their colorful dress, skill at handicrafts, and general resilience (over time, they've even developed a genetic resistance to malaria). During a cultural exchange, you'll meet locals and immerse yourself in their culture before capping the experience with a traditional Tharu lunch.
Day 3: Rafting Trip to Pathharboji Village, Walking Safari
Kickstart the day with a sunrise rafting expedition from the camp, which typically lasts around 45 minutes. Your destination is Pathharboji village, where you'll be welcomed into the home of a large family and sit down for tea. Afterward, you and your naturalist guide will transfer to the nearby lodge, where you'll overnight. After dropping off your bags, you'll sit down for breakfast and will have the rest of the morning free.
In the afternoon, the adventure continues as you embark on another walking safari in the park. As you stroll through the jungle, keep an eye on the riverbanks, where you might just spot rhinos congregating for a drink. If you get really lucky, you might glimpse a Bengal tiger stealthily stalking its prey in the tall grass.
Day 4: Tiger Jeep Safari
Chat with a local specialist who can help organize your trip.
Wake up to the sounds of the jungle as birds and animals begin to stir with the first light of the day. After a hearty breakfast, you'll embark on a thrilling full-day Jeep safari through the park. Once again, you'll be in hot pursuit of the elusive Bengal tiger. Accompanied by an expert naturalist, travel to hidden observation points, scenic lookouts, and prime wildlife habitats where you stand the best chance of glimpsing these exotic creatures.
Around midday, you'll break for a packed lunch, then continue the safari throughout the afternoon. With any luck, by the end of the day, you'll have snapped some pics of the famous big cat. On your return journey, you'll stop at the park headquarters and the Gharial Breeding Center. Here you'll encounter some of the world's rarest crocodile species. Later, as the sun dips below the horizon, return to the lodge and unwind with a well-deserved cold beverage and/or a soothing hot shower. A delectable dinner will be the perfect ending to this memorable day.
