Experience South Korea at a seasonal crossroads in November, as fall gradually gives way to winter. Days are shortening, and temperatures falling, just as crowds and prices begin to decline. Spend the first two weeks of the month chasing the year's final fall leaves, seen to best advantage in the south at Naejangsan National Park. Southern cities, including Jeonju and Gwangju, offer slightly warmer temperatures and the opportunity to dive into South Korea's diverse history, culture, and gastronomy.

Weather

November is the transition month between fall and winter in South Korea. The beginning of the month marks the conclusion of the fall foliage season when visitors can catch a last glimpse of colorful autumnal leaves before winter arrives. As the month continues, days gradually become shorter and temperatures cooler, with a monthly average of 41°F (5°C). Toward the end of the month, temperatures can dip below freezing, with snowfall rare but possible. November is one of the driest months of the year, and humidity remains low throughout.

Crowds & Costs

As the winter low season approaches, crowds diminish, and prices fall. Tourism will be highest at the beginning of the month while temperatures are mild and fall leaves remain on the trees. Nevertheless, November can be an excellent month to see South Korea's spectacular autumn leaves in a quieter environment, as most sightseers visit the country's national parks from mid-to-late October. For the best leaf-peeping opportunity without the crowds, arrive early in the day to top destinations.

Where to Go

The first half of November offers a chance to appreciate South Korea's autumnal scene. Head south to Naejangsan National Park for the ideal late-season leaf viewing, with red and gold leaves covering Naejangsan Mountain and the surrounding landscape. Visitors can take the cable car up the mountain to the summit at 2,503 feet (763 m) or choose from one of the park's myriad hiking trails. Consider using Seoul, approximately 2.5 hours away by train, as your home base for a day trip. Then check out an entertaining Cookin' Nanta performance, scope out the National Museum of Korea, and shop for upscale souvenirs in Insadong.

Alternatively, southern cities like Jeonju or Gwangju cut travel time and present an opportunity to explore regional centers of gastronomy and culture. For warmer weather, choose a southern or coastal city like Busan, where you can take in seaside views as you stroll along one of the city's six beaches. History lovers will love Gyeongju in the southwest, home to more than 50 UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites and the country's only national historic park.

What to Do

Hiking and trekking top the list of activities at the beginning of the month as visitors seek out peak autumn vistas. Naejangsan National Park offers trails for all ability levels, and visitors can hike to one of the park's historic temples, including Baegyangsa Temple and Naejangsa Temple. Travelers basing their trip in Gwangju may also plan a visit to Mudeungsan National Park, where avid outdoors people can conquer the three peaks of Mudeungsan Mountain, known as the "Jeongsang Three."

Ignite your tastebuds in Jeonju, the birthplace of South Korea's ubiquitous mixed rice dish bibimbap and a UNESCO Creative City for Gastronomy. While you're tasting your way, stop by the historic hanok village to wander the narrow laneways amid traditional homes. Then explore Mural Village and visit the Gyeonggijeon shrine and Pungnammun Gate. In nearby Gwangju, experience a bastion of South Korean culture in the heart of the country's mountains. Absorb the ancient history of the Joseon Dynasty at Namhan Fortress or learn about the country's contemporary history at 5-18 Memorial Park.

In Seoul and other major cities, hit top tourist attractions, with outdoor sightseeing planned for midafternoon when temperatures are warmest. Especially cold days at the end of the month call for a trip to one of South Korea's famous bathhouses, jjimjilbang, where visitors can steam in a sauna and warm their bones with a bowl of hot noodle soup.
