Travel to South Korea in October for stunning autumn views. This month's pleasant weather and fall foliage attract visitors from across the globe. Take in the changing leaves along a hiking trail at a national park, or enjoy the scenery while sightseeing in Seoul. For a day trip, visit Nami Island, a popular tourist destination year-round that is exceptionally breathtaking in the fall. While crowds can be high this month, October's popularity is well-deserved: it's one of the best months to visit South Korea.

Weather

October in South Korea is cool and dry. Daytime temperatures are mild, with an average high of 64°F (18°C). In the evenings, temperatures cool significantly, averaging in the mid-40s (Fahrenheit). Rainfall and humidity continue to decline throughout the month, with a monthly average of 2 inches (52 mm) of rain in the capital city of Seoul. This month's clear skies and pleasant autumn weather are ideal for outdoor excursions. As the weather continues to get cooler, visitors should pack layers, including a light sweater or jacket for evening activities.

Additionally, October is the peak fall foliage season in South Korea. Leaves begin to change color in late September, and the season lasts until mid-November when winter weather arrives. Visitors can enjoy the rich colors of fall leaves all month, but the best time to visit for autumnal views is mid to late October. The forecast for peak foliage dates varies annually and based on location, so be sure to research before your arrival.

Crowds & Costs

October is a popular month to visit South Korea, with optimal weather and the fall foliage season drawing visitors from around the world. During the two weeks of peak foliage from mid to late October, crowds are particularly high at popular fall sightseeing spots such as Nami Island and the country's national parks. Expect busy hiking trails and high traffic coming into national parks. Travelers can avoid some of the crowds by arriving early to top destinations. Flight and accommodation costs also rise with demand, though fall prices remain less expensive than during the summer rush.

Where to Go

The best spot for autumn sightseeing depends on the timing of your visit. At the beginning of the season, travel to Seoraksan National Park in the northeast, where colorful leaves first make an appearance. The park boasts over 30 peaks crowned with vibrant red and gold leaves. Later in the month, follow the path of the leaves south to Naejansan National Park, where visitors can catch a final glimpse of red maple and gold ginkgo trees before leaf-peeping season concludes in November. Be sure to research before your visit, as peak dates for fall leaves vary depending on annual weather patterns.

Another popular destination this month is Nami, a half-moon-shaped island located less than two hours from Seoul. Known as the filming site of the 2002 romantic drama television series "Winter Sonata," the island is a popular tourist destination year-round but is particularly beautiful during the fall. With its iconic tree lanes and riverside walks, Nami Island is perfect for a stroll beneath vibrant autumn leaves. The island can be accessed via ferry. More adventurous travelers may wish to take the zipline, which zooms you to the island at speeds up to 35 mph (56 km/h).

What to Do

October is the best month to see the country's autumn leaves. Many South Koreans take advantage of the excellent weather to get outside, with hiking, backpacking, camping, and glamping especially popular. However, you don't necessarily need to leave the city to enjoy autumnal views. In the capital, spend an afternoon meandering through the Seoul Forest Park or visit the Seoul Olympic Park, featuring over a mile of rows of golden ginkgo trees. In the nearby city of Incheon, the Maple Tree Tunnel at Incheon Grand Park offers pretty views and fantastic photo ops.

Immerse yourself in South Korean history by visiting the country's top historical and cultural sites. Explore the eight archaeological sites within the Baekje Historic Areas in the country's mountainous mid-west, or travel to Gyeongju in the southwest, known as the "museum without walls" for its 52 UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites. The Gyeongju National Park, a must-visit for history buffs, is the only national historic park in the country. Or consider venturing north to join a guided tour of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the heavily guarded "no man's land" that borders the two Koreas since the Korean War.

Many of South Korea's fall festivals take place in October to celebrate harvest time or honor historical events. Travel to Jinju in South Gyeongsang Province, the site of South Korea's most famous lantern festival. Commemorating a medieval battle against the Japanese, the festival brings more than two million people to Jinju yearly to see hundreds of colorful lanterns float along the Namgang River. Alternatively, visitors can celebrate the abundance of the harvest by sampling local agricultural products, including rice, coffee, and cheese, at smaller regional festivals in Icheon, Gangneung, and Imsil
