Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Entebbe
Welcome to Uganda! Touch down in Entebbe, a city that lies at the northern end of Lake Victoria, the second-largest freshwater lake in the world. Your driver-guide will be waiting to take you to your hotel in this lush metropolis, known for its laid-back vibe, stunning lakeshore views, and seafood cuisine.
Take an optional trip to Uganda's capital, Kampala, which lies one hour north of Entebbe, for a tour. Start with a visit to the fascinating Uganda Museum, which features exhibits detailing the ethnological and natural history of the country and its heritage. Afterward, you'll hop on a boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) for a short street food tour, where you'll sample the famous "Ugandan Rolex," a vegetable omelet rolled up in chapati.
For lunch, sit down for a plate of luwombo, a popular dish of various ingredients cooked in a banana leaf, created by the Baganda people, one of the most extensive pre-colonial kingdoms in East Africa. Afterward, continue to Kabaka's Palace, home to Buganda royalty since 1885. Your day ends with a trip to a local craft market to hunt for unique souvenirs before returning to Entebbe.
Day 2: Transfer to Jinja, Explore
This morning your driver will head east toward Jinja, where you'll find the long-disputed source of the Nile River. Check into your hotel and then explore the city independently. The vibrant central market is a highlight, where you can wander among stalls heaving with fresh produce, souvenirs, and crafts.
You can also visit the Madhvani House Museum to learn about the region's history and pay respects at the Jinja War Cemetery, a memorial for fallen British and Commonwealth soldiers. Don't miss the Source of the Nile Bridge, which illustrates the power of the Victoria Nile.
Day 3: Coffee Tour, Hike & Sabiny Cave Experience
Start the day with a scenic hike through banana plantations to a homestay, where you'll take a tour of a local coffee plantation. Your host will guide you through the entire coffee-making process, from bean to cup. Afterward, taste some of the delicious brews and then stop for lunch.
In the afternoon, discover more about the region's culture with a unique cave experience. Set in a natural cavern, you'll hear traditional songs and stories performed by the Sabiny people and learn about their traditions, such as name-giving ceremonies. Savor delicious warrior snacks prepared over a roaring fire as you dive deep into the rich heritage of this ancient community.
Day 4: Source of the Nile Tour, Transfer to Moroto
This morning, take a two-hour river cruise to the source of the mighty Nile River, where it spills from Lake Victoria, traveling 4,000 miles (6,437 km) to the Mediterranean Sea, making it the world's longest waterway. Soak up the scenery as you float past riverside communities.
Afterward, your driver will be waiting to take you north to Moroto. This far-flung, mountainous region is home to Indigenous communities who've lived off the land for centuries. Along the way, you'll enjoy views of the landscape, stopping for photo opportunities. When you arrive, check into your hotel for a restful evening.
Chat with a local specialist who can help organize your trip.
Day 5: Karamojong Villages Tour
Immerse yourself in Karamojong culture with a trip to some traditional villages comprised of mud-and-grass manyattas (huts). You'll meet the Karamojong people, who originated from Ethiopia, and continue to live a semi-nomadic, pastoralist lifestyle. Visit several villages with a Karamojong guide by bike or on foot, learning about their lifestyle, from preparing food to ceremonies.
Take part in typical activities such as beading, dancing, archery, and even wrestling. Enjoy a typical village lunch and join the community's cattle warriors to uncover more about their pastoral lifestyle. End the day with a drink as you watch the sunset over the plains, then return to your hotel in Moroto.
Day 6: Transfer to Kidepo Valley National Park
Leave Moroto this morning and travel two hours to Kidepo Valley National Park in the far northeast of Uganda. This lesser-visited park covers 556 square miles (1,442 sq km) of rugged landscape, from rolling savannas to the Kidepo and Narus Rivers and towering peaks, the most impressive being the 9,000-foot-tall (2,750 m) Mount Morungole. Relish the pristine scenery as you approach Kidepo, where you'll check into your lodge and rest ahead of tomorrow's safari.
Day 7: Kidepo Game Drive & Guided Nature Walk
Early this morning, you'll embark on an unforgettable game drive through Kidepo National Park. In the predawn darkness, you'll get the chance to spot nocturnal creatures such as leopards and aardwolves. Watch the sunrise over the golden savannas and look for iconic African wildlife, from buffaloes and zebra to giraffes and elephants.
Return to your lodge for lunch and a rest before your afternoon nature walk through the park. Kidepo is home to over 75 species of mammals and 470 types of birds, some of which your guide will point out as you stroll through the park. Learn about the local wildlife, which includes animals found nowhere else in Uganda, from cheetahs to kudus and bat-eared foxes.
Day 8: Ik Hike & Village Visit
Rise early this morning for another drive through the park to meet the Indigenous Ik group, sometimes called the Tueso people. The community descended from Ethiopian migrants who were the first people to settle in the remote Karamoja region. Known for their strong warrior traditions, the Ik people carve a living from the land mainly through hunting, foraging, and farming.
Meet your Ik guide for an all-day hike in the Morungole Mountains, where you'll learn about the group's history and distinctive lifestyle. You'll see how they farm, rear goats, and harvest honey. Have lunch en route and participate in daily activities before hiking back to your lodge for dinner and a final night in Kidepo National Park.
Day 9: Transfer to Gulu
Say goodbye to Kidepo National Park this morning and make the five-hour transfer to Gulu, stopping for lunch along the way. From its torrid colonial roots and war history, Gulu has emerged as one of Uganda's safest and fastest-growing cities. After settling into your hotel, head out to explore the thriving markets, try the local food, and perhaps stop at an artisan workshop.
Day 10: Transfer to Entebbe, Depart
Today your Uganda tour adventure comes to an end. Your driver will take you back to Entebbe in time to catch your homebound flight. If you have extra time, take an optional walking tour of Entebbe, where you can pick up souvenirs at a craft village and wander through the botanical gardens. Safe travels!
